Give me a break-so this is now the Republicans fault? How about sending some welfare recipients over there then for cover. Geez just admit it your boy blew it and worse he covered it up. The cover up ultimately will be the story....that and trying to strongarm the whistleblowers.

I realize you're trying to cover for your guys by distracting away from their misleading and perhaps incompetent actions but I actually agree with you. The budget cuts to Embassy security should be a major part of the discussion. In these crazy times we can't have our people in the thick of trouble spots and then try to skimp on their security.

I hope you're wrong because this is too important to gloss over. If failures happened we need to find out where they were and how to prevent them in the future. I do agree that no one goes to jail, unless perjury or obstruction occurs.

 

Lets face it. Other than sacrificial lamb Susan Rice every other major player has plausible deniability or is gone. Most...are gone.

 

1. General Ham - retired.

2. Leon Penenta (Sec of Defense) - resigned

3. Hillary Clinton (State Department Sec) - resigned

4. General Patraus (Head of CIA) - resigned

 

Apparently Ms. Rice has some good teflon. She is not a diplomat by nature. She is the daughter of a major banker who was on the board of the Fed.

 

As to the real time decisions. Do nothing was apparently not only an option. It was THE option. Only the office of President can issue Cross Border Authorization (CBA) to bring in out of country military assets - never done. General Ham has testified those assets were in place and ready. Obama went to bed to get ready for Vegas. Likely leaving Iranian-born Valerie Jarrett in charge. CBA was never issued. Assets that were ready go never got the order. There had to be concern of a Jimmy Carter 'Desert 1' situation, and the issues raised had militants and non-combatants been killed or massacred in a counter-attack. In purely political terms, do nothing was good option. Wait it out and hope for the best. Do not disrupt the election machine.

 

From testimony yesterday - paraphrased - 'Did anyone ask Libyan officials for use of airspace?' 'Not that I know of but there was a UAV overhead.' 'Would they have likely given permission?' 'Yes'. But - no one even asked. The problem I have is the do nothing option was obviously considered - and taken. The former SEALS were killed in the 2nd wave during the evacuation process. Woods bled to death from wounds after the mortar round killed Doherty. Had the in-country rescue mission failed there was no backup plan apparently, no assets in motion to come in as plan B or plan C. Nothing. It has the feeling of abandonment. Why were these 40 or so American basically abandoned and left to their own and supported only by the diplomatic security function from Tripoli? That is what stirs my view on this situation.

As an aside ... comparing this story to Watergate ... what helped keep Watergate fresh week after week in the early '70s were the lively characters -- Nixon himself, G. Gordon Liddy, Martha Mitchell, Sam Ervin, Mo Dean standing by her man John, Woodward & Bernstein, Deep Throat.

 

By comparison, Benghazigate is boring.

I agree. The problem is that nobody wants to work to prevent it from happening again. Everyone wants to hang the ones who messed up. This isn't corrective action taking place. This is who is going to fall on the sword taking place. Everybody is backed into a corner with their guns up. That's not how you prevent the same mistakes from happening again.

I believe the best way to prevent it happening in the future is to shine a bright light on what happened in the past. Contrary to urban legend, we sometimes can learn from the past. The question is, will we? I do not want our people put at more risk than they already are and I do not want our politicians to think they can try to sweep things aside without having a lot of explaining to to.

What kept Watergate alive as opposed to Benghazi is that the mainstream media did not try to protect Nixon and there were only a handful of stations available, with all of them following the story front and center. I will agree that the cast of characters was fun to watch.

I agree. The problem is that nobody wants to work to prevent it from happening again. ...

 

There is no evidence of that. In fact the prevention and fixing depend on something that is not yet at hand - the detailed and specific facts. What is in hand is lies and deceitful actions. This is why the lies and misleading actions matter - they obscure and invalidate any attempt to fix anything going forward.

Watergate tested the underpinning of American democracy. Not so Benghazi. Anyway, that ain't the real tragedy. The real tragedy occurred Saturday, when seven more brave U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan and America once again collectively yawned.
