If he's well enough to have been playing 5 on 5 in practice for two months, he's well enough to play. If not, then he needs to stop practicing, and stop running fives until he is "mentally ready" to play.

Exactly. He's going on two months of full practice.

Wuss.

I think it's an extremely smart decision by Rose. He's looking at the long-term, which is what a smart person would do in his situation.

Sure he's been cleared to play, but if he doesn't feel he's physically at the level he was before the injury yet, it'd be dumb to try to come back.

He'll never be at the same physical level he was at before. It's repaired. It'll never be good as new. He may as well retire.

He knows his body and himself more than anyone, if he's not ready he's not ready. It doesn't matter if he's good to go physically if he can't get over the mental hump. If D Rose doesn't think he can go out there and be D Rose then I'm with him until he feels like he can be. He's the one with a career at stake, I mean it's not like he doesn't want to play I'm sure he would love to be out there. Has to be something going on up top whether its doubt or some other kind of insecurity.

So what would make one mentally OK with playing 5 on 5 in practice but not in a game?

We talkin bout practice, man. Practice. Not a game. Practice...

For those BGP athletes/former athletes that have had torn ACLs how long was your recovery time and when did you tear it?

Do you have Rose's back on this? Should he sit until he can confidently play with worry? Can he ever play without worry?

I had ACL surgery in December of 2012 and I know exactly what he's talking about. Functionally, I can do about everything without noticing a thing in my day to day (sit behind a desk). I also just resumed jogging again, but absolutely no cutting or jumping. I was fortunate enough to take the entire month of December off work and do therapy 4 days a week.

I consider myself pretty active, I actually did it playing rec basketball. It completely plays with your mind. I can't take a quick step without thinking about it or getting paranoid. The thought of when you first tear it never goes away. My surgeon said that it really is a 2 year recovery and that professional athletes are actually brought back before they are 100% recovered if they come back after a year (watch Ricky Rubio's first games back from ACL tear).

I think guys forget that this is his CAREER, comparing him to someone playing high school sports is different because that guy doesn't compete at that physical level nor is going to have to accumulate enough wealth in 10-12 years (if they're lucky) to last them their entire life. I am only talking from my opinion, but I could imagine returning to football being easier than returning to basketball because of the cutting and leaping in basketball.

I think it's easy to call him soft, but I don't think you can speak accurately unless you have gone through it yourself. It's also stupid to compare him to AP (freak of nature and even Dr J Andrews said he's an absolute exception), Wes Welker, ect is an apples to oranges comparison as everyone's body is diff and recovery is different.

Most people calling him soft are fans and have their interest over his. I think it's one of those scenarios that unless you've had a ACL tear yourself, you don't get much credit for being educated on the matter.

DRose wanted to wait a year to let Miami get older. He didn't think they could beat Miami this year. With Thibs and a healthy roster they probably beat any other team in the league in a series. JMO.

And I understand why you have his back and I expect you to.

Somebody's got too haha! I'm not sure how I'd feel pre-ACL surgery. But after having it and going through that rehab, I'd say take your time. Its hard to get back out there and play, I had a few scares and I'm certainly not playing against the caliber of talent DRose will. I also didn't get paid to rehab.

It's just a tough situation, because every ACL tear/surgery/rehab is different.

I completely get why everyone thinks he should be play, but I have his back...which I'm sure makes him feel good.

I know this will probably make zero sense but I think it might actually be easier for a football player to come back than a basketball player. I know that sounds dumb, but basketball players are making a ton more cuts, jumping and potentially landing on others feet. Combined that with box outs, being blind sided on picks, its a lot of wear and tear on a week, unconfident knee. His knee has been through two traumas. The injury and then the surgery.

I know someone is going to say yeah, but you are getting hit in football. Very true, but you are constantly moving and cutting on that knee throughout a full basketball game, not the case for Wes Welker or even AP.

Either way, I think it's in DRose's best interest to finish the season and make sure he's 100% healthy moving forward. I'm telling ya, it isn't easy to get back out there and play, especially when you're career is on the line.

Fine.

I still think he's soft. :D

Did anyone think that maybe he just sucks at basketball?

Only you...

Did anyone think that maybe he just sucks at basketball?

Uh.....no. Not at all.

Maybe this has been covered, but did anybody else know that Iman Shumpert tore his ACL and meniscus on the same day (or close to) as Rose?
