I don't know enough about the situation to take sides, but what I can say is that there are many conclusions being reached here without evidence. Several have already pointed out that for the student and his parent. Let me do so for the teacher.

 

As a teacher myself, I can tell you that on many occassions I'll be the first teacher to notice a dress code violation late in the day. Why? Sometimes it is because students dress in layers and the outer layer is in compliance. Sometimes it's because other teachers only see the student sitting in his/her desk doing work, not standing up. Sometimes a student has changed clothing, perhaps after a PE class.

 

Does the teacher have an agenda related to gun control? We have no evidence to support a conclusion either way. If a student violates a school policy (which I don't believe is the case here, per my interpretation of the dress code), as this teacher thought, I have to follow the policy whether I agree with it or not.

 

Like LN, I wish that the student had complied with the administration and changed the shirt, then for him to go through the proper channels to show that he was not in violation or to promote that the policy get changed.

Many school districts haul parents to court when their kids are frequently truant. So there's precedent there. In addition, I noticed in reading Highlands' dress code that parents as well as students are responsible for what the kids wear. So there's another precedent.

 

If the old man put the kid up to this, then I think he could be charged with being a mental midget -- or perhaps conspiracy to force a minor to commit a disruptive act.

 

I find it quite amusing that you talk about "respect for authority" being the main issue here but you've referred to the student's father now twice as his "old man". Personally I find that phrase to be quite disrespectful towards elders. Perhaps we should practice what we preach?

My first inclination was to dispute that "old man" is derogatory, but the more I thought about it, I realized that you have a valid point. You are right. I should not have used the ageist phrase.

Is it possible he got arrested because he refused to comply with the order (as right or as wrong as that order may have been) and instead of a physical confrontation their policy is to call the po po?

The dress code looks to be very similar to the one we use at my school. I haven't seen the video or read the articles posted, but I don't feel that a photo of a gun depicts violence, so I agree with the father that the shirt does not violate the dress code. If the shirt showed a gun aimed at someone's head, that would be a different story.

 

In 1980 I wore a tee with the bathing suit pic of Farrah Faucet on it and I was told to turn it inside out because her guns were sending a bad message. Sponsor wasnt NRA but Speedo, Same thing imo, IDK, Cmon

Which is why at some inner-city high schools the colors of the kids' shirts is strictly regulated. Red and blue not OK. Have to wear beige, gray, white, etc.
