I know next to nothing about what can make a violent explosion, the proximity of the explosion and what causes explosions. If I drive by and there is no one there saying we are evacuating a one mile radius of this plant how in the world am I supposed to know how big the explosion is going to be? Ugh. I hated Chemistry. And all sciences for that matter. No pun intended.

I doubt if the people of Mobile Bay know that there are chemical companies making the same chemicals that caused the Bopah India tragedy nearby. And I am not sure if they tell the local residence about the steam generator driven logging mills in Oregon. But the OSHAA videos say to evacuate at least a mile away if you see the flashing lights on the tower (if you have time).

Okay....so I've seen some slow motion videos of the explosion and it almost looks like something explodes from the left side of the screen, away from the plant. I don't know how explosions work and if gas ignites on the outside the comes in, but it seems strange. Go to about 2:10 in the video and watch.

I see what you are talking about... I'm thinking that a tank exploded, and the flash to the left before the "big" blast was just that side of the tank blowing first. I obviously have no idea though. Definitely interesting.

I can't call the father an idiot without knowing what he knew. If he knew it was going to explode like that then sure he's an idiot. I don't think he was expecting that and again, without someone there properly evacuating people then how can he know? I you look in the mirror reflection there were parked cars in that area. He has the video but they weren't alone in that area.

Just because they weren't the only one there doesn't mean his decision to put his daughter in harm was any more justified. JMO, of course.

I didn't feel they were too close. I would have never guessed it would have exploded like that.

I guess in the case of the photographer, this is another one of those situations where "common sense" isn't so common...

I'm mystified by that thought. It's a fertilizer factory. It would be the same in my mind as not expecting a fireworks factory to make that kind of explosion. It's highly explosive stuff when heated together like that. At least with Mount St. Helens there was no flame to send notice that "this was it."

 

And I can tell you that my child would not be there to watch it from any distance.

 

I just get confused by the voyeristic culture we have become where we want to have the big video and up close/personal experience with danger and act surprised when danger bites back. It's one thing to be a coorespondant covering the story, it's another to pick up my cell phone and record it with my child in the passenger seat.

Agree 100%! If so, then the rescue people would have hurried and evacuated the area before the big explosion. From the video it looked like the guy was far enough away, I heard that the shock wave was about a mile or two around the building as well. The town is only a few blocks, and all of it was effected.

Agree 1000%. I think it's in our nature to get that video as Hatz touched on, but IMO, that wasn't safe.
