April 17, 201313 yr (Dry Ridge, KY) – The Kentucky State Police at Dry Ridge will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints throughout the district. The checkpoints will be set up on roads that have a heavy amount of crashes. Officers will be looking for impaired drivers, seat belt violators and other infractions. April 18, 201313 yr I guess they are driving to a wet county to get their fix and heading back home. That's pretty much what it looked like to me when I was looking at those different locations.

At least they are not in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell like they do other times when they need to generate revenue. And before that one upsets anyone, I am all for them coming to those three counties for enforcement action as long as they are going to regularly patrol in these counties too.

Also, the theory behind the checkpoints is to deter drunk driving (although some would say its to increase revenue). If, by announcing the checkpoints, they deter somebody from drinking & driving, then it is (arguably) successful. All in all I agree with you, though. April 18, 201313 yr I saw 2 state troopers facing opposite directions chatting off south 471 in Highland Heights out where the construction is taking place. Its right before you can either head toward Cincy (Riverbend) or head south 275. There are a ton of barrels in that area, I expect a mess out there this summer. Both ways will be parking lots during rush hr.

CC is right on the first point, they have to be announced prior to the stop point. There may be a court precedent regarding the matter at the federal level but I can't remember. I do know the OSP does the same thing and when I asked "why," I was told it was because they have to. On the second point, I mostly agree with you. For years the only time I saw a KSP patrol car in NKY was on 275 right after a Riverbend concert. (Amazingly, you see OSP guys on 275 on their side of the river all the time after these shows too. Not sure what they might all be doing???) But in the last year or so I've noticed a much more consistent presence of KSP patrol cars on 275, particularly in Campbell County, and often right around the 471 interchange. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a patrol, as they are almost always parked, but I have noticed more of their vehicles lately.
April 18, 201313 yr Ohio State Highway Patrol only have jurisdiction on the highways, they don't answer other "Police type" calls. Comparing them and KSP is kind a like comparing apples and oranges. I think the reason that the check points are released ahead of time is more as a deterrent that anything else. "Here is where we will be set up, but you don't know where we will be and when we will be there". If you look at that list, at least 46 check points are noted, that would take a huge amount of resources and manpower to set up to do that many traffic checkpoints. Does not sound reasonable that they could actually complete that many checkpoints, unless this is a list to be completed over several months.

They are not getting paid overtime due to budget constraints, they are adding it in as comp time.

I wonder if this is due to the sequester?
