I may have been too optimistic considering Cozart is at .175, Heisey at .132 and Hannigan is at .038. Can they make the playoffs with 3 starters hitting under .200?

If they stay healthy, they will be fine. Pitching and Def is solid. There are always stretches of great and bad baseball over the season. Most of the time they are good. Votto is not even in a groove yet. Hanny, Cozart, and eisy wil hit what they normally do over the long haul. Bullpen is solid. This team should win the division by 5-7 games.

Yep. The Reds and Bob Castellini have realized that after 24 games the team has absolutely no shot at making the playoffs. They realize that the team will continue to hit at this rate the rest of the year. They have petitioned MLB and the NL to let them forgo the rest of the season, and have asked the MLB players association for permission to pay the player's salary based on just one month of play.

How is it ridiculous? And you did not even answer the question. Can the Reds make the playoffs with 3 starting positions hitting less than .220? Is the pitching and defense enough to overcome a severe lack of offense at 3 of the 8 positions?

 

If you think those starters will be replaced by other players say that. If you think those players will hit more than .220 then say that. If you think Choo is going to hit .375 and win a batting title and be an MVP candidate and lead the Reds to a title then say that.

 

Or you can just ignore the question.

When you ask the question after 24 games it's ridiculous. Now if the question is posed after 50, 60, 70 games and you still have three starters hitting under .200 then we can probably give you an adequate answer.

Well 24 games or 124 games it is obvious this team has no #2 hitter once Phillips had to move to the cleanup spot. I'd have preferred Leake bat there when he pitches.

 

Reds are a .500 team right now with 16 home games versus 9 road games. They came off of an 8-2 homestand because their starting pitching set some kind of record. And that was in Great American Smallpark. That will have to continue along with a stellar bullpen if they are to contend.

 

The left field answer is not Heisey. At best they can hope Paul playing against righties and Heisey playing against lefties amounts to some sort of offense and defense that can pass until Ludwick comes back if he ever does. And there does not appear to be any help in the minors.

 

Shortstop they are stuck. Which would not be terrible if the other positions could make up for the lack of offense. But that is not the case.

 

Catcher at least has some hope. Maybe Hannigan was hurt worse than he thought and is not finished or maybe Devin just takes over as a full time catcher without the pitching staff flipping out and hits .250. Again no help in the minors.

 

Right now with so many automatic outs in the lineup there is no reason to pitch to Choo or Votto. And even Phillips and Frazier aren't going to see much. And Skinny Jay Bruce is not a threat although maybe he gets on one of those streaks.

 

Basically to answer the question ..........this pitching staff is going to have to be ultra-good for the Reds to contend. San Fran did it last year with basically a weak offense. It is possible.

You didn't say every Red. You were talking about STARTERS. I'd say that there is a good chance that every starter will be over .220. Can Leake play shortstop? If not, I don't know what you're getting at there.

You just said Cozart career is .244... You also mentioned him as one of the 3 batting below .220 but yet his career is .244? he will hit closer to .244 than .220 this year... Thanks for playing

I am a big Reds fan and i have faith in this team. We might make the playoffs just because of our pitching! I am starting to be concerned about SS, LF, and C. I think you can have Hanigan not hit because of how good he is behind the plate. However, we need more from Cozart and the LF platoon. I will say this: If you look up the Minor League stats of Cozart, Heisey, and Hanigan i dont think any of them ever hit over .300 in the minors, so they aren't going to hit better in the majors! I think if you look at a players minor league stats and they played in the minors for 3 or more years, you can then project there stats in the majors. A 3 year average stat line in the minors of .270, with 25 homers, is about a .250 average with 15 homers in the majors. They were average Minor LEague hitters, so they will probably be below average Major League hitters.

Geez now Frazier has joined the under .220 club. Given his fast start that is surprising. I guess one good thing is Heisey won't be playing LF anymore even if he returns to the roster and the Paul/Robinson combo can probably hit over .220. But now 3B, SS, and Catcher are all still in the under .220 club. But yet the Reds remain in contention.
