I'm going to ask a related question. Is the hiring of an assistant coach that brings a player into the program a deliberate tactic to avoid the transfer rule?

I didn't start the thread to say Snapp is leaving but I was talking to him yesterday and we got to talking about it because I asked if he were to eventually take a new job, would Ethan be eligible if he went with him?

Varsity coach has a son/daughter that played for him/her.

Varsity coach takes a new job elsewhere and decides to take their kid with them.

Varsity coach stays in same residence.

 

What is/should the ruling be on the kid's eligibility?

 

If a kid's parent is a teacher and coach does that change anything?

 

I think the boy should and would be eligible to play for Dad will now be an employee in the District

My ex-wife was a teacher and when she changed schools, there was no issue and we lived in the same house. She said something along the lines then that there is a policy that kids can change schools with parents.

Did your daughter play varsity sports? That's what's different than the standard teacher who takes a new gig.

Same house. However, Boyd County didn't contest the move. There are several schools in our area who never contest a transfer of a student.

I know if you are a teacher, you can live out of district and have your kid go to the school you teach at tuition free....KHSAA obviously has rules, but I'd assume the same would apply to a kid who is an athlete. (Granted eligibility without paying the price of sitting out a year)

Based upon my understanding of the rule, the mere changing of the coaching job by the Dad to another school is not an exception to the one year period of ineligibility period. One of the exceptions enumerated in the transfer rule must be satisfied (i.e. a bona fide change of residence). So your assumption would be incorrect. Not having to pay tuition is a local school board decision totally separate and distinct from the KHSAA's rule on transfers.

I am sure LN will correct me if wrong. My understanding of the rules is that a player is automatically ineligible when he/she transfers. The player has to apply to the KHSAA for an exception to be declared eligible.

Correct. Just because the sending school doesn't contest doesn't guarantee eligibility. However, if the form doesn't have any snags, no red flags are raised and the sending school doesn't contest, why would the organization bother with verification?
