30 for 30 "Survive and Advance"

Featured Replies

All of the 30 for 30's have been good, but this one was great! The story, the inspiration, and the determination of Coach Jimmy V and those players was definitely remarkable. It was definitely a "shed a tear" kind of show. It was impression to see the impact that Jimmy V had on so many people for so many years, including his foundation. It is still hard to watch that 1993 ESPY speech without getting choked up.

To see his players talk so highly of him and Lorenzo Charles was great and to see them moved to tears with a simple reminiscing of a speech or moment was great to see. All coaches for all sports at all levels should try their hardest to imulate Coach Jimmy V.

I laugh every time when Jimmy laughs at the guy behind the camera telling him to wrap it up.

I've probably listened to his Espy's Speech more than most. When I need a pick me up from time to time, its something I listen to because I keep it on my iPod. But I'm so glad that they made this story. I wasn't even born yet when this team played, and was only like 7 when he gave the famous speech, but I have a lot of respect for this man and feel like if we all tried a little harder to love the way that he did, then this world would be a better place.

I will admit that this one made me shed a couple of tears.

I don't remember the exact words that Coach K used, but he made some type of reference about how there was a greater purpose to that NC State team winning all those game and never quitting...eventually culminating in his great speech which lead to the creation of the Jimmy V Foundation and has raised more than 100 million plus for cancer research. I don't know, the Lord works in some mysterious ways!

The 17'9" three point line for the ACC was a strange thing to see.

Agreed. It was a trial and not used by the NCAA. It actually helped NCST win the tourney.

I watched it last night with my son. Enjoyed the time with him remembering a time when I was nearly the same age. Very well done.

Jordan could launch from there nearly.

I'm still amazed about a few things. The barely beat Wake in the ACC first round, then beat a loaded UNC team and then had to beat UVA to make the NCAAs. Down by seven with less than a minute to Pepperdine (without the three), then a game against a two loss UNLV team before a breather vs Utah. Then another game vs UVA before the final four. Unreal run.

^ I remember that most felt the Louisville-Houston semi was the "real" championship game. Both were considered a notch above Virginia; and NC State was an afterthought.

That's the way it was. Louisville-Houston was a GREAT basketball game. NC State could slow it down, be patient and frustrate a Houston or a UNC.

The one factor that is often forgotten is that the teams they beat, had to beat themselves along the way as well with missed Free Throws. All the way to Houston. There was more luck involved in my mind with their run than just about any NCAA champ I've seen. (Karma, Luck, Providence - whichever word you want).

They also played Georgia in the Final Four after Vern Fleming and the Bulldogs upset Jordan and UNC in the regional final. Another bit of good fortune.

"If you would have passed him the ball, he would have crapped his pants." -Coach V

I really enjoyed this episode of 30 for 30. It is ironic that the 84 NC State team lost in the first round of the NIT, the last defending champion team to do so until this year.

I would of loved to have sat at that table and listened to all the players tell stories and I would of loved to heard coach V's pregame speech before the finals. That assistant coach couldn't even talk about it. AMAZING what a great motivator can do with with a bunch of kids with HEART!!!
