June 12, 201412 yr Carrey is just bad. Dumb and Dumber was just bad. This has good idea written all over it. Hollywood tried hard to make Carrey a star, but he just isn't very good. I'd give him Truman, except that Edtv had a similar enough premise and was a much, much better movie. The only movie I can really watch him in is "Fun with Dick and Jane,". I just sat here slackjawed when I read this statement. I know these things are a matter of opinion, but, wow, I've never heard someone say that before.

June 13, 201412 yr Whether you like him or not it would be hard to argue that Hollywood didn't make him a star. According to the website box office mojo, his movies have grossed almost 2.5 billion for an average of 94.5 million per film. That's pretty good. For comparison here are some of his peers per average film in millions: Tom Hanks 101.5, Leo DiCaprio 97.3, Tom Cruise 95.1, Johnny Depp 75.4, Morgan Freeman 75.1, Matt Damon 73.6. He's about as good of a draw to the theater as any other actor. Hey, if you're a fan, I won't think any less of you. As for the comparison, like many things it looks good at first glance, but doesn't give the full picture. Some of the guys in the comparison were making movies in an age that grosses were going to be lower (Cruise, Hanks, and Freeman jump out), that will lower their average. Also, many in your list have taken parts that they knew would not be a box office hit, but did so for the craft or because they felt strongly about the project. I wouldn't necessarily call the guys in your comparison Carrey's peers. I'd more likely lump him in with other guys such as Adam Sandler. Except, I typically find Sandler pretty funny and find his movies much more watchable than Carrey's.
June 13, 201412 yr You'll have to elaborate. The part I bolded. I've never heard anyone that thought EDtv was really even all that good, let alone better than the movie that came nearly a full year before it. I just basically couldn't disagree with you more, but that's just my opinion on it.
June 14, 201412 yr The part I bolded. I've never heard anyone that thought EDtv was really even all that good, let alone better than the movie that came nearly a full year before it. I just basically couldn't disagree with you more, but that's just my opinion on it. On the bolded, I have zero problem with that. Watching a movie, listening to a song, viewing art, reading a story, are all perceptive. I liked EDtv. I thought it was funny, fairly witty, pretty well acted, and overall a movie I'd watch again. I was entertained. The Truman Show, didn't do that for me. Premise was good. It had its moments. But it didn't hold itself together well enough near the finish IMO.
June 14, 201412 yr I was one of the few that really liked The Cable Guy. Thought Liar,Liar was his funniest movie though. He looks strange in the close ups for the DandD 2 trailer, like he has had plastic surgery or something, Daniels looks the same.
June 14, 201412 yr There have been a number of his movies that I really enjoyed. Dumb and Dumber was not one of them. Stupid is not funny to me.
June 15, 201412 yr "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "The Truman Show" both immediately come to mind as other Jim Carrey movies I really like. Also a fan of "Man on the Moon". But I do really like "Dumb & Dumber". Well how do you like that... turns out I'm a bit of a Carrey fan. No idea.Eternal Sunshine and Truman Show are both great flicks.
June 15, 201412 yr There should be an Oscar category for Best Actor in a Comedy and if there was, I would think he would have won for Liar, Liar.
June 15, 201412 yr Spoiler alert. Any other male leads hoping to deliver an Oscar performance? I think you will be on the outside looking in.
June 16, 201412 yr Didn't Dumb and Dumber make a lot of money at the box office and later rentals? Evidently quite a few other people thought it was good. I liked it. He's made several movies that I've liked. Mask comes to mind. Also The Truman Show, Bruce Almighty, and Liar Liar.
June 16, 201412 yr This is all him, and frankly, one of the funniest things in the whole movie. Just a riot.
