Marvin Lewis: Bengals will use cap space to keep our own players

Featured Replies

The Bengals lead the league in salary cap space, but that doesn’t mean they’re going on a spending spree on March 12.

In fact, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis says that the team’s priority is to keep the players it has, not to add a lot of high-priced talent from elsewhere.

“Our cap space needs to be spent on our own players,” Lewis told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

At the very least, Lewis’s comments strongly suggest that the Bengals won’t be out-bid for Smith or Johnson. If either of those two get away, that’s a bad sign for fans in Cincinnati.

I agree with this thinking and although I don't expect or want the Gals to go after a bunch of free agents if the right situation is out there for any of our positions of need I expect the Bengals to make a run.

Im not gonna be shocked if they leave. Who wouldnt want go somewhere where they can win the "BIG" games....

Johnson is already on record saying he wants to stay and Smith getting arrested helps our cause too. I don't see it with either of these players.

Just struck me as funny that a Bengal getting arrested helps the cause.

This has been the Bengals method every season, same ol, same ol.

Most of these teams who can win the "BIG" game really don't have much salary space to sign those guys. So they most likely wouldn't be leaving to go to a team who can win the "BIG" game. If they leave it would be because the Bengals gave them a cheap offer, and someone offered a lot more. However in terms of them wanting to win, if they want to be on a team who can win their best bet would be to stay with the Bengals since the teams you mention most likely won't have the money.

I been saying this for while now. People are going to look and see all this money the Bengals have and then get mad when they don't go out and really pursue any big names. However people have to realize there are a lot of key players that they need to lock up who are free agents right now. Then not to mention they need to get contract extension in place now for Geno, Dunlap, and future money for the contracts of Green, Burfict, and maybe Dalton depending on how he does this year.

It should would be nice though if they went out and at least spent some money on one big name that could fill a need.

This has been the Bengals method every season, same ol, same ol.

In the past I doubt they had much choice, because top players just wouldn't want to come here. It is more attractive now than it was, however they really do have a lot of young talent that they need to use the money on to lock up for many years. However as I mentioned it should would be nice if they actually did go out and sign a big name that also filled a need for the team.

Do you disagree?

It's actually pretty refreshing to have talent that other teams covet. They need an infusion at safety, running back and linebacker but we'll get a better picture after the draft.

I agree on those three positions but they need to make a decision on the free agents (both our own and others we want to bring in) before the draft.

And they need to get Johnson or Smith under contract so they can use their tag to control the other one.

Good point. Game of chess.

I still would like to see the Bengals shore one of the three needs mentioned through FA.

They need a good safety in a big way; I like Crocker being that he played at Marshall but

he's not the answer.
