Two Sports--Pressure to choose?

Featured Replies

It really bothers me that people get on here and soccer bash. Any sport that has a club or travel aspect to it makes the same requests of its athletes. And most, if not all will tell you up front that at a certain competition level the athlete is expected to make the club sport their priority. It is not something you are blind sided with after the fact.

I hate that kids have to choose, it has affected my kids, they have had to give up playing sports they had played all of their lives. Frankly, it was much harder on us than it was on them. They made their choices and went on with life.

If you don't want your kids to have to make a choice there are options out there. Is 7th grade a little early? Maybe it is but unfortunately it is the nature of the beast.

I love soccer. that was my best sport and had a scholarship offer to play in College and that was back in the day where soccer wasn't played a lot like it has grown in the last 20 years.

Also coached soccer before we had kids, so I will never bash the game, love the sport. Ironically though that is the 1 sport none of my kids ever played mainly because it was during the same time other sports they played went on.

Welcome to the site. Please keep in mind people on here don't only bash soccer because of the club aspect. There are a few on here that just don't care for the sport.

Problem with choices needing to be made at such an early age is the just dont know what they want to do yet, they are not developed fully yet and their parents still have unrealistic dreams of their kid getting free college. Let them be kids, let them enjoy school. Memories of a lifetime.

What do you think of a HS coach who cuts a kid who he says is "definitely good enough" because he played another HS sport and wasn't available for off-season workouts???

I thought that schools excuse players from off season workouts if they played another sport for the school. I even thought it was a KHSAA rule...I could be wrong. If it is not, it should be. Problem is the coach does not have to be honest as to why the kid was cut. Might be worth going higher up the chain with this one.

To answer your question... the coach is a jackwagon.

Thanks hoops, That post of mine was painfully long lol.

It just comes down to a gradeschool coach has no right to tell any kid what sports he can and cannot play in HighSchool. That is what put me over the edge.

I'd love to know the background/playing history of some of these coaches. My guess is they were "JV All-Conference Towel Boys" in their days.

I would really question that coach and the schools AD.

We are lucky that at many High Schools in the area do the same thing, and I will speaak of Cooper HS. If you are playing one sport you are not allowed to start practices for the other sport until the one you are currently playing is over. It's a great rule and keeps all the coaches of different sports from forcing kids to do both at the same time.

Should not have to choose at the middle school level.

Funny, this topic came up in church today with a friend of mine. His daughter stopped playing softball at NCC because the coach does not want kids to play other sports. The coach made it very clear he did not want them doing other sports and not very nice to the kids or parents if they tried to do other sports.

I hope you have your facts straight. NewCath's coach is a friend of mine. He ENCOURAGES kids to play other sports. What he won't tolerate is kids missing NewCath softball games for club/AAU games and practices. He puts the school team first and expects the kids and parents to do the same. He is absolutely one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Anyone who talks poorly of Coach Barnes, has never met him. He ALWAYS puts the kids first.

The more I got to thinking about your post, the more disturbed I became. Coach Barnes works with the kids more than any other coach at NewCath in terms of playing other sports. Not only does he encourage them to play other school sports, he works with them on their club/AAU teams. He just won't tolerate players missing for their select teams, as most coaches wouldn't. Check his starting lineup and how many other sports each girl plays and tell me he "did not want them doing other sports"

Really? Be careful before you start bashing someone who really does have the kids' best interest and the program's best interest at heart. And NO, I don't have a daughter who plays for Coach Barnes.

I played for that coach in Knothole and in high school. I have a very, very, very hard time believing your friend.

Are all these players that you have listed playing "club" sports or just other high school sports. Almost impossible for a soccer or basketball player to play a club sport and high school softball at the same time with out having some conflict. I think if both sides would work together there would very little conflict and it could work out but not if a coach "won't tolerate players missing for their select teams" If that is the coach's stance that is fine with me, I just would be very surprised if that player choose HS softball over their club sport.

I feel that there is a very simple answer for this issue. In Ohio, a student/athlete can not compete in a "club" sport while playing a varsity sport. Unless this has changed recently that has been the rule in the past. If the state of Kentucky would adopt the same rule it would take care of this issue. If you feel the "club" sport coaches are willing to work with the high school softball coaches.... well that just will not happen. Too much money and ego involved to do so.

As for the post about Coach Barnes, I have talked to many people that know this man and I can say that the person who was at church better go back and hit the confessional. From what I have been told about this man he has been more than willing to work with players in club sports, but expects those that are in club sports to be at games and practices when requested and it has been the club coaches that will NOT work with changes in schedules. I don't think what some realize is that those who are missing a fast pitch game or practice for a club sport game or practice has an obligation to their high school team first. While most schools don't make cuts in softball because of numbers, there are those girls that are on the team but not in the lineup that don't miss a practice or game. Now is that fair to the girls that never miss? Also, is it fair to the girls that take this sport serious and have aspirations of playing at the next level? Most importantly is it fair to what is on the front of the jersey, the school?

Softball is a spring outdoor sport and the factor that can not be controlled is the weather. Changes will happen and players, parents and club sport coaches need to be able to adjust to that. If a club sport coach cant then I would have to look and see if this is a coach I want my child playing for. I am sure if it is the other way around and the club sport coach has a change in their schedule, they expect the student/athlete to miss their high school sport....?

I will say I know of athletes that end up choosing either the softball high school or club sports. While most will have say that it hurts softball if they choose, I have nothing but the utmost respect for that player and parents of that player to make such a hard decision. Obviously, this player must be very good in that club sport and is a very good high school player in that club sport, so do make such a decision for the betterment of themselves and the team is very commendable and respectable.

So I guess if the KHSAA would put something into motion to address this issue it would help, but as most know, the KHSAA can be somewhat timid about such decision because of law suits, and honestly I can say I dont blame them. Seems like the way to get what you want is if you have the money, lets go to court:idunno::isurrender:

But as for Coach Barnes, it seems the post about him is VERY INCORRECT due to the support seen here and from others I have spoke to, Keep up the good work Coach!! You are headed in the correct direction!!

I am not sure about Ohio but I believe the rule is you can not play for the same club sport, ie you can not play for your HS soccer team and play for a club team at the same time. You could play soccer for your HS team and then play club softball or basketball.

If KY adopted a rule like you are saying all you would see is more 1 sport players, and I think no one wants to see that. There are plenty of club coaches that would be willing to work with HS players if people are honest and up front about it.

Who says their obligation to their HS team should come first, you? Very few HS teams put half as much time, effort, money etc into their teams as the avg club team. So why should HS be before club? Not sure if you have been paying attention latley but HS is not driving the bus for kids to play at the next level anymore, club is. (and yes I know most kids won't play in college but most would like to) If they don't let club players play other sports you will end up loosing a lot of good players, maybe that's ok to some maybe it's not. Let it be known I do not like the way things are now but I sure am not going to be hard headed about it and think it's my way or the high way.

BTW my post have nothing to do about coach Barnes, I am just talking in general. If a coach has a rule its up to you to decide if you can deal with it, but there are consequences for both sides.
