This! This clown's (pun intended) character is oozing through. He was guilty of taking a lot of plays off last year, now this year, at the 11th hour, he takes the game off. Anyone who takes him 1st is insane.

 

He is under-sized, and at best, he is a sack a game guy. While impressive, 16 sacks, how much am I going to get the other 59 snaps the offense gets?

 

This guy is writing the book for how NOT to handle this situation for players to come behind him.

In general I'm not in favor of litigation, but in this case, I think he should sue the NFL. If there's ever been someone who could make a valid argument that he could play in the NFL, if allowed, it might be him. I doubt there's a single GM or coach out there that would turn him down if they had the chance to get him this year, just because he's a year younger than the "rules" say. Heck, you guys have already made his argument for him...if he stays and gets injured, he loses money...if he sits out this year, and his draft stock drops, he loses money. He's in a lose-lose situation, and it's all the NFL's fault.

 

Sue away. The NFL, as a business has every right to set hiring requirements as they wish, fair or not. If Clowney can force the NFL to take him when he does not meet their basic requirements, based on potential, I can should be able to force any business to hire me, that won't based on my education, regardless of experience.

You play if you're healthy in my opinion. Like Spurrier said, they don't have time to worry about one player. With or without ya!!!

I agree. I do not think it would have been held against him sitting out and signing with an agent, but this potentially could. I doubt it effects his draft stock, but more question will go beside his player card. And in fairness to Clowney, we are not him nor do we know what kind of pain or discomfort he was in last Saturday.

You guys act like if he takes a year off, he's automatically the #1 pick next year. That's a huge assumption, and one that is probably incorrect. Teams will seriously question his desire, work ethic, and heart. NFL players will have no respect for him.

 

I disagree with you. Do you not think some people in the NFL are probably hoping he sits out? I'm sure the Giants are and other teams with bad records to this point are hoping and praying he doesn't get hurt and they are awarded the first pick. It's a business and you have to protect yourself. IF he get's injured, will S. Carolina take care of him? No! I think some of you give the NFL too much credit for the looking for character guys. It's talking points most of the time.

What's your definition of under-sized? 6-6, 270 for a DE really isn't under-sized at all. On that note, this is the reason I was really opposed to him sitting out this year, teams begin to question his commitment and then after that will follow more concerns involving his consistency when he's playing. Not going to lie though, if you're a GM with the attitude "anyone who takes him 1st is insane." And you need a DE you would probably be fired. He has by far the most potential of any defensive player I've ever seen. The only way they'd let you get out of that is if your team is set on DE's, which the Giants kind of are. Don't think Clowney would be a good fit there. But again, the draft is all about potential, as is every pro sports draft. You're drafting the player that can hopefully be the face of your franchise in the top 10, and Clowney is by far the leading candidate. Even with his issues right now, I couldn't justify taking one of the QB's over him in the draft unless you're the Jaguars.

Potential doesn't equal production, and I watched Suh in college, and particularly loved his game against Texas, he just flat out dominated. Also, as people have stated, being potentially the best defensive player out of the draft in the past 20-30 years. And I'm not alone on that opinion. Unlike you probably, I also watched him during high school, and am quite familiar with him. But again, you'd be surprised. Again, Suh was taken #2 overall, hence it is very possible for a DE-DT to be taken that high without a doubt. I just don't comprehend how you seemingly think he's a twig, I mean my god.

 

Your case is similar to not taking Andrew Wiggins #1 overall in the draft. Ok, he took plays off in high school. Ok, he needs to develop some more moves. Ok he's a little thin. But you can't teach size, speed, athleticism, and pure technique, and that's what Wiggins and Clowney both have.

He's built alot like Jevon Kearse except he's a little taller. He's also bigger then DeMarcus Ware. Size is not the issue, what's between his shoulders is.
