What about parents in the stands getting on other kids of their own team? I have seen and heard this over the years and can't believe it. You can say what u want to your own kid, but when you start calling out other kids on your own team, I think it's a recipe for disaster.

It's kind of like reprimanding someone else's kid in front of their parents. Verboten! If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. :lol:

Anyway, tried teaching the better half the rules, terms, etc., she just got them mixed up with wrong sports. She still enjoys going though. Since my son is now coaching, she had been going to a few of his games and just when I think she's beginning to understand what is going on, she wanted to know "what inning we were in" at the football game. It's all good, I do get a kick out of it.

 

Was definitely being funny; I just couldn't add any emos since I was on my Kindle. Glad you took it the right way!

My first year I worked a game and noticed during a timeout that my partner was having a discussion with a fan. I asked about it later and he said he was close to having the guy thrown out because the fan said he disagreed with some of his calls. I asked him if he wanted to ref a game with no fans in the stands.

 

Had one guy we had to have thrown out. His daughter fouled out. During a deadball I noticed him come out of the stands and go to my partner who was on the endline. We had him removed. His daughter them got off of the bench and stormed out while leaving a parting shot for the official. No big deal. It was embarrassing for the coach and the other fans.

 

If a fan is not cursing loudly and is not making threats then he/she stays.

 

99% of officials know fans are going to yell and it rolls right off their back.

 

In the 13 years I officiated, I had to get rid of 2 fans. One came out on the floor after my partner.

The other one was a unique situation: This fan was trying to be the center of attention. There were only about 100-150 people in the stands. He repeatedly stood up, made comments at me and my partner, the coaches (from both sides) and then started chanting idiotic things just to draw attention to himself. I went over to the AD of the school we were at and asked, "Is this normal?" They said, "Yeah, pretty much." I asked if this fan had ever been asked to leave and they told me, "Yes, more than once." I said, "Ok, then he won't be mad when you go up there in a second and ask him to leave?" The AD said, "Probably not. He knows the drill."

Now, if I'm the AD of this school, I'm banning this fan from my gym. People are going to say you can't do that, but you can. II'd take $5 out of my own pocket to make-up for the gate fee I'm going to miss out on, but I'm not going to have "repeat offenders" in my gym.

No doubt middle school is worst. Had Conner parent cuckooing while opponent shot free throws, middle school game!

 

Saw parents get upset with Ryle coach at freshman girls game. Ryle coach was pressing up 25 w 1 minute left. The other team did not provoke this.

 

Girls games it is more pronounced, less in the stands, everything is magnified and heard.

 

Worst are the parents of the better teams when things don't go their way.

 

Ryle parents complaining about ref's calls when they are up 25. Just enjoy Johnny or Suzie's big game.

 

I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU PARENTS, if your kid is playing freshman ball as a freshman, they are typically not destined for greatness, especially on the girls side. So, enjoy it while it lasts. I know I'm dreading not being able to see my kid play anymore.

This situation summarizes the life of a ref.

 

I was at a game recently sitting near an elderly gentlemen. He was wearing the officials OUT! Cursing. Got himself all wound up.

 

A whistle was blown and he said "how many shots?" I said "2." He said the following.

 

"I'm blind and have to wear these funny glasses. I can't see a darn thing."

My point was some coaches act as poorly as some parents. Ryle was not pressing as a result of something egregious their opponent did. Poor sportsmanship on coaches part.

And at the much larger schools I dont think this is a true statement at all when it comes to Frosh playing Frosh level.

Fans at the Conner/Holmes game took this thread to a whole other level!!! Good Lord!!! Just happy that the players of both teams were able to walk on their own out of the locker room!!!

I think you should correct this to "fan". I was there and one particular fan from holmes was cussing and telling the ref he sucked basketballs. At one point she even yelled bs at a call not once not twice but 5-6 times. I was informed the Holmes ad was there just to watch her behavior.

Agreed! Absolutely ridiculous! It was an extremely physical game and the refs tried to control it, but that "one" fan should have been an embarrassment to Holmes. Slamming her chair and screaming BS over and over again. Unacceptable.
