Have Highlands and Covington Catholic Ever Been In Different Classes?

Featured Replies

I agree. In fact, CCH lost to Conner (I know, I know...poor weather but...) and Conner only won one playoff game. CCH would be a top contender but not the perennial favorite.

I agree 110%

Here are teams that CCH very well could of lost to during this past season just in 5A.

Bowling Green

John Hardin

Cooper

Conner

Franklin Co.

Warren Central

Harlan Co.

Sure they could of won also, but I believe that it would of been a tougher road to climb than 4A was this past season.

With that said, and this may ruffle a few HHS feathers, but put HHS in 5A this past year and it may have been a bit tougher for them also. I don't see HHS beating BG.

You are beginning to lose all credibility in this thread about Highlands and CovCath...

No reason to ruffle feathers but you will get disagreement. I don't see BG beating HHS last year but it certainly would have been a possibility as strong as BG was and you are certainly right that it would have been a bit tougher for HHS, to say the least.

I believe there was a thread or two on it last fall. Would have loved to have seen that game happen.

My point exactly.

2001 lost to Rockastle County @ Home

2002 lost to Lexington Catholic on road

2003 lost to East Jessamine on road

2004 lost to Highlands on road

2005 lost to Lex Cath on road

2006 won state

2007 lost to Highlands on road

2008 lost to Johnson Central on road

2009 lost to Johnson Central on road

2010 lost to Johnson Central on road

2011 lost to Highlands on road

2012 lost to Highlands on road

Out of the above Cov Cath lost to the eventual state champ 5 times. (4 of those were to HHS) But in some of those losses they were more manhandled than other teams. I just don't see it and don't wear those shade of glasses.

I guess T'Birds knows what he is talking about then. Thanks for posting all of those road game losses. Just sayin...

Take Highlands out of the mix and those road game losses are now Home games against different opponents.

Like I said earlier spin it how you want to but Highlands (not the rest of the State) is the reason CovCath is not winning State Championships more time than not, simply just because of seeding out of the district. :thumb:

What makes you believe HHS would not have beaten BG? Just curious of your logic,!

He might as well just went ahead and said that Cooper would not have been playing in the State Championship game then...:D

How many times did you see HHS play last season?

Well it could potentially be the same reason you think Highlands would have won. You believe Highlands was better, while he believes BG was better. It's one of the crazier theories that I've come up with, I know.

Way too much stock in a home field advantage in High School football. Besides that, it's not how it works. You have to think that many of those road games STAY road games because of which district hosts.

2001 lost to Rockastle County @ Home 17-14

2002 lost to Lexington Catholic on road 29-27

2003 lost to East Jessamine on road 35-22

2004 lost to Highlands on road ?

2005 lost to Lex Cath on road 42-39

2006 won state

2007 lost to Highlands on road 40-0

2008 lost to Johnson Central on road 49-14

2009 lost to Johnson Central on road 51-32

2010 lost to Johnson Central on road 41-28

2011 lost to Highlands on road 49-14

2012 lost to Highlands on road 28-13

So which of those years would it be that Cov Cath would have won state without HHS? Definitely NOT '01, '02, '03, '04, '07, '08, '09, '10 or probably '11. One the road or at home they would not have advanced and won it all in their class in those years even without the Birds. State title teams win on the road or at home.

'01, '02, '03 Colonels would not have defeated Boyle. In '04, even without HHS Bell played the Birds tougher and Boyle may well have bested them too. In '05 they would have had to meet Lex Cath on the road either way that season I think. So the score is the score. In '07 Bowling Green would have been stiff competition for the CCH. '08 and '09 they would not have bested JC anywhere and in '10 the Eagles almost pulled off the win in the final minutes vs HHS and that game would have been played on the road regardless of what your ranking in your district was that season.

Again. Which seasons? I think the records demolish the misnomer of CCH's greatness if the Birds weren't there.

I ask because recently the KHSAA posted their enrollment numbers for the 2012-13 school year (seen here alphabetically and here by total size, not just male enrollment). If they hold to the pattern they have done usually, this will be the first of two years they use for the next alignment in 2015-16.

Currently, Covington Catholic has a male enrollment of 531 students, a significant jump from the 499 they had in 2011-12. This would make them either the smallest or next to smallest 5A school, depending on exactly how many are in the class. They're 2 above Scott (down from 570 in 2011-12), 3 above Doss (up from 508 in 2011-12), and within 10 of two others below and two above them. Meanwhile Highlands also experience a significant jump, up to 462 from their previous male enrollment of 462. They're smack dab in the middle of what will be 4A. There's almost no chance they'd lose or gain enough to move.

Consider also that unlike 3A which has no NKY district, thus allowing petitions to play up, both 4A and 5A would have fully formed NKY districts. Schools like Harrison County and Holmes are firmly entrenched in 4A numbers, as well as close-ish options like Mason County and Bourbon County. Scott as well if they were to stay lower than CovCath. In 5A, schools like Conner, Cooper, and Grant County aren't going anywhere. None is within 50 students of the bottom of 5A, and Conner is the closest to the top of 5A at a full 74 students short of 6A. The long and short of it is that a petition by Highlands to play up to maintain with CovCath would (if done by the travel hardship requirement) most likely be denied. I was just curious how big a deal that would be.

Secondary question, what sort of damage could CovCath do in the eastern side of 5A that will look virtually the same as it is now? Almost all of the 5A changes would take place in the west.

Could somebody refresh me on the current guidelines for splitting the classes?

The only guidelines I'm 100% certain of is that there are 32 in the largest and smallest classes. So 32 in 1A, 32 in 6A. I believe the other four are evenly split to start. Then comes the requests to play up which alters it some. For my purposes at looking at it here, I had 2A as one team higher than the other three classes (157 teams / 4 = 39.25 so 40 in 2A, 39 in the others). That would make CovCath the smallest 5A school if that's how it went.

That sounds right...at least as for what my understanding of the system is, that sounds right. Thanks.

You are beginning to lose all credibility in this thread about Highlands and CovCath...

Actually if you take your bluebirds glasses off you may see that it wasn't that much of a stretch what was said in my post.

No Bias here, I don't have a dog in the fight between HHS and Cov Cath. Just stating a point that I believe BG was the 2nd best team in the state behind Trinity.

He might as well just went ahead and said that Cooper would not have been playing in the State Championship game then...:D

I never said Cooper could beat Highlands did I?

You see there is an unbiased view (mine) and a biased view (yours)
