DragonFire Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I ask because recently the KHSAA posted their enrollment numbers for the 2012-13 school year (seen here alphabetically and here by total size, not just male enrollment). If they hold to the pattern they have done usually, this will be the first of two years they use for the next alignment in 2015-16. Currently, Covington Catholic has a male enrollment of 531 students, a significant jump from the 499 they had in 2011-12. This would make them either the smallest or next to smallest 5A school, depending on exactly how many are in the class. They're 2 above Scott (down from 570 in 2011-12), 3 above Doss (up from 508 in 2011-12), and within 10 of two others below and two above them. Meanwhile Highlands also experience a significant jump, up to 462 from their previous male enrollment of 462. They're smack dab in the middle of what will be 4A. There's almost no chance they'd lose or gain enough to move. Consider also that unlike 3A which has no NKY district, thus allowing petitions to play up, both 4A and 5A would have fully formed NKY districts. Schools like Harrison County and Holmes are firmly entrenched in 4A numbers, as well as close-ish options like Mason County and Bourbon County. Scott as well if they were to stay lower than CovCath. In 5A, schools like Conner, Cooper, and Grant County aren't going anywhere. None is within 50 students of the bottom of 5A, and Conner is the closest to the top of 5A at a full 74 students short of 6A. The long and short of it is that a petition by Highlands to play up to maintain with CovCath would (if done by the travel hardship requirement) most likely be denied. I was just curious how big a deal that would be. Secondary question, what sort of damage could CovCath do in the eastern side of 5A that will look virtually the same as it is now? Almost all of the 5A changes would take place in the west.
Sweeperboy Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Their would be a new Sheriff in 5A if CovCath made that move. JMO Only team that would stand in their way would maybe be Bowling Green. If Highlands and CovCath are not in the same class the last 6yrs CovCath most likely wins min 3 of those 6 titles and maybe up to 5. Had they been winning titles early and often then the PHM would never have surfaced and CovCath would be dominate in their own right.

Those teams under Coach B were just not that good talent wise. Hopefully we stay in the same class, but if it presents itself, I have a feeling the Colonels would welcome the move.

Since Johnson Central beat Cov Cath in '08, '09, '10 I would say that 3 would be the maximum as well. The myth is always that "because HHS was in our way." Many, many teams can say that. The Birds haven't been the bane of the Colonels anymore than JC has been. :thumb:
doubledeuce Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 If I counted right, could Beechwood and NCC both be in Class A?

Or, I might just say that JC would be State Champs in those yrs if Highlands is playing elsewhere. Either way, in the current system, the State Championship goes thru Ft Thomas whether you come from Park Hills or Johnsonville...:thumb:
tdyballgame Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 You don't know many Colonels, do you? LOL! What's that have to do with it?
ThrillVille Cardinal51 Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 LOL! What's that have to do with it? Well you said that colonels would welcome the move. I don't know any Colonels that would be happy about that move. Winning state for CovCath means beating Highlands, and I hope that never changes.

Winning state for CovCath means beating Highlands, and I hope that never changes. You would be surprised how many "Colonels" I know. And the vast majority, parents have you, tell me if HHS wasn't in their district or class, they could win state more often. And let me tell you, they wish it was true. As far as the players which I respect very much because most are very polite and respectful to me and my family, secretly "hate" HHS and they have told me that too. I have had one as much as ste...errr... borrow my copies of HHS highlight tapes to watch and study to see how the heck they do it each year. It was a funny story when we got them back. With all that said and from my experiences with the Blueboys, I would say they would welcome the idea. Might not admit it, but every kid wants to win state and if that means a change in classes to make it happen, it would be accepted. Just saying! Stairway to Seven!

Uh, because I'm not an old guy. Seriously though, I didn't mean to infer all "Colonels". My apologies if taken that way. I'm just sayin, wait, there's that word again, that there are some that would welcome the change. Some are parents and some are players. Again, this is my experience with the "Colonels" I know. I too would hate it. I'm not a bettin man, but I agree the two schools would continue to play each other.

Well we don't know the same people I suppose. It would knock the wind out of me if a CovCath football player told me that they wished Highlands wasn't on the schedule. I can honestly say that I think all of the guys I played with feel the same exact way too.
