Have Highlands and Covington Catholic Ever Been In Different Classes?

Featured Replies

Well we don't know the same people I suppose. It would knock the wind out of me if a CovCath football player told me that they wished Highlands wasn't on the schedule. I can honestly say that I think all of the guys I played with feel the same exact way too.

Maybe it was the Era of the PHM. Just saying! Oh, and breathe!

Something to chew on. You probably played on a State Championship team. Right? If so then you would say never. Now if you take the last 6 years at CCH and go and ask them if they had a choice of #1- either losing to HHS again and again over the past 6 years or #2 - having HHS in a different class thus giving CCH a better chance of wining a Title, I would venture to say they would pick the latter. Like Clyde said, most would "privately" admit. It's all good though. I hope we keep playing at least till Thunderbirds's boy and the man makes it through the program with Dale coaching them.

Yeah, but without Highlands in their own District they wouldnt be playing JC in 2nd round games.

Or, I might just say that JC would be State Champs in those yrs if Highlands is playing elsewhere. Either way, in the current system, the State Championship goes thru Ft Thomas whether you come from Park Hills or Johnsonville...:thumb:

I think that's what I said.

My point was that Cov Cath would not have been in serious competition for the state title regardless of HHS' presence or not. It wouldn't matter when they played Johnson Central, they would have still lost. Therefore they aren't State Champion material those years. :thumb:

You are most probably right.

I tend to spin it a little different, I say that w/o Highlands in the mix they are #1 seed out of their district every yr and playing at home instead of traveling, etc, etc.

They would still run into JC along the way and most probably would have lost a few of those still I guess...:thumb:

I tend to believe that CovCath helps Highlands each yr by traveling to JC and getting beat as CovCath gives them all they want and some and helps wear them down for Highlands...Just another way to spin it...

The scores were 49-14 in '08, 51-32 in '09, and 41-28 in '10. Other than the last year, do you really think home field would have mattered?

If I counted right, could Beechwood and NCC both be in Class A?

Purely on the 2013 numbers, Beechwood is the smallest 2A school, 33rd smallest in the state. They have four more males than Fort Knox and are within 10 of three other schools. They're also 23 below the next smallest 2A school (Ballard Memorial). Fort Knox's senior class is its smallest - Beechwood's is its 2nd smallest. Bishop Brossart is the only school within range that experienced a significant jump from 2012 to 2013, and their senior class is the smallest in the school by 12 males. So maybe on them.

NewCath though, is the 8th smallest 2A school, so unlikely to be anywhere near dropping. They experienced a mini jump from 2012 to 2013. They'd need a huge dip to fall down.

Another school that would need a large dip to drop? Mayfield, which is currently the 4th smallest among projected 2A schools.

So they both could end up in AA.

Looks like Bishop Brossart might get their wish and be Class A and to top it off Beechwood and NCC to Class AA. But always subject to change.

Have you ever played or watched a CCH playoff game in late November on a Sat afternoon in Park Hills? It's not fun....Home field advantage would of made a difference for CCH...IMO!! Just ask Dudley Hilton how easy it is. It is a tall task to go in there and win on that stage. Some can do it and most cannot. I'm not saying CCH would of won but it wouldn't have been an easy 35 plus point game for JC. Games would have been tighter. History between CCH & HHS past matchups during Nov in Park Hills backs up my claim.

There are 7 schools between Beechwood (184) and New Cath (223) in enrollment, including Covington Holy Cross (222). Beechwood has actually lost boys numbers on that report, which makes sense. Last year's graduating class was weirdly lopsided in favor of boys with something like 2/3rds of the graduates being boys.

Using DragonFire's numbers above, it looks like Beechwood needs a good incoming freshman class of boys to hang on to 2A. It would be great if that happened. That would be a fun 2A district - Beechwood, NCC, Holy Cross, Lloyd and Newport.

It didn't bother Rockastle. The recent Cov Cath teams have not been the Cov Cath teams of history. That's the truth. I'm not a JC fan. A close game to a rival does not mean anything when matching up with other teams. I might add that in many of those years Johnson Central played Highlands closer than the Colonels. It's a big "what if" game and the blanket statement of "if they weren't around we would have won x number of titles" is a statement without data to support it.

Their would be a new Sheriff in 5A if CovCath made that move. JMO

Only team that would stand in their way would maybe be Bowling Green.

If Highlands and CovCath are not in the same class the last 6yrs CovCath most likely wins min 3 of those 6 titles and maybe up to 5.

Had they been winning titles early and often then the PHM would never have surfaced and CovCath would be dominate in their own right.

I could think of about half a dozen teams that would of given Cov Cath a tough go in 5A just last year. I wouldn't think they'd dominate the way you think they would.

I agree. In fact, CCH lost to Conner (I know, I know...poor weather but...) and Conner only won one playoff game. CCH would be a top contender but not the perennial favorite.

At this point over the past 5 years whether Covington Catholic was in a diffferent class or not, I do not see how they have shown anything that says they would have definitely won a state championship.

My point exactly.

2001 lost to Rockastle County @ Home

2002 lost to Lexington Catholic on road

2003 lost to East Jessamine on road

2004 lost to Highlands on road

2005 lost to Lex Cath on road

2006 won state

2007 lost to Highlands on road

2008 lost to Johnson Central on road

2009 lost to Johnson Central on road

2010 lost to Johnson Central on road

2011 lost to Highlands on road

2012 lost to Highlands on road

Out of the above Cov Cath lost to the eventual state champ 5 times. (4 of those were to HHS) But in some of those losses they were more manhandled than other teams. I just don't see it and don't wear those shade of glasses.
