I feel you. I turned 18 two weeks before I started college.

 

I did not turn 18 until Feb. of frosh year in college because I graduated HS in 3 yrs. I survived. But if I had a do-over, it would be different. I hated being the youngest one in college!

I have ZERO issue with a parent making this decision EVEN if they say it is for athletics.

One, the child has developed friendships with his classmates. Two, there is a stigma of being "held back" once you repeat a grade.

No problem with making that decision when they start school. Honestly though, who thinks little Johnny is destined for greatness in 1st grade. I would have more of an issue with it if Johnny was in a higher grade.

Agreed. I don't care what your situation is. If you make that decision to have your kid repeat a grade in school, it will always be a stigma that your kid has to overcome.

He has to develop relationships for sure, most of which are already established with kids who are in middle school or lower. I've known of no stigma ever once you've repeated a grade other than sniping adults. Kids don't care.

On a related note, I think parents, especially young ones simply don't have the foresight to think that far ahead sometimes. Little one is ready to start, he's old enough, boom he's in K4. He gets to the 5th grade and they often think, "what was I doing?" I was one of those parents.

I could care less who is held back and who isn't.

 

I do find it interesting that many of those who held back are celebrated for career point achievements, it is clearly an advantage for most.
