We don't, it's all speculation. I will say this though, when I was a kid, I loved Hank Jr and I had no idea who Hank Sr was until they did that "Tear in my Beer" video where they brought Sr back from the dead. Creepy.

I don't think of Hank Jr. or Taylor Sr. either as good singers. They both are talented entertainers. The audiences have already cast their vote on that whether I agree or disagree. The rest is just a matter of personal preference.

I agree on Taylor, she has an ok voice but she is far from a great singer. Same with Hank. Same with dozens of talented artists.

This is a very good post, and while I don't totally agree, you definitely nailed Randall Hank as far as knowing his audience. It's important for an entertainer to be able to figure that out, because it leads to longevity (or, it did in those days).

 

I won't, however, go with any of this crazy "most talented ever" stuff. He's written some cool songs, and on balance, I enjoy him. I tip my hat to him for being able to make a career somewhat independent from his father, at least stylistically. I can name a half-dozen or more artists who I find more talented, however. Johnny Cash, Waylon, Willie, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons all come readily to mind, and I wouldn't rule out tossing Conway Twitty, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Billy Joe Shaver, Chris Knight and Kris Kristofferson into the mix ahead of him.

 

I liken Hank Jr. more in the same vein as KISS and AC/DC. Good, real good at what they do, but they're also going after the low-hanging fruit. You'll never hear Hank Jr. and Bob Dylan compared in a songwriting contest. You will hear Townes compared thusly, however.

 

 

 

Saw 'em at Caddy's Garage before they bulldozed it to make room for the new stadiums. Great, great show. You'd have loved it. Another example of a band knowing its audience and making it successful.

Only a mild H3 fan but there is something about his voice I like.
