Good call on Buddy Moore. Great gridiron ref too.

I'm playing in high school, at Harrison Co., against Louisville Male (Griffith, Turner, etal.) Harrison Co. has the ball. Scoop blows his whistle and calls "5 seconds in the lane", on the defense, and gives the ball back to Harrison Co. We all looked at each other for a few seconds, figured he knew what he was doing, and continued with game. Classic.

Younger guys probably don't know this, heck I'm 53 and I didn't know it til about 10 years ago, but back in the 1960s and before, basketball officials were essentially free agents. Coaches had the ability to secure whatever officials they wanted, or could get, for their home games. If social media was around then, these boards would light up, huh?

I always like it when Ernie Liggett did a game I played in. Even if I disagreed with a call, I knew he was impartial and he was working hard. I really respected that. He also had a nice demeanor on the court - in control of the game but you could talk to him.

 

I was not a big fan of Buddy Moore...a little too full of himself for my liking. I know Kenney Shields would take Ernie over Buddy any day.

If my memory serves me right there was a real good solid ref in the 9th Region for many years named Tommy Thompson. Seems like he was a ref forever and perhaps continued up until around 2000. If I'm on the right track of who I think that I'm talking about he was a little guy with a grey crew cut who called a solid game like a robotic machine. Perhaps anyone who remembers can weigh in and fill in the details or correct me if I'm thinking about someone else.

You have it right. Tommy was a friend of mine in those days. I coached his son in soccer at Dixie and taught his daughter. Good family. I haven't seen him in a while, strnge how when you change jobs and move out of the area for a while how you lose touch. Great family and he seemed to be a good ref. Tommy was a hockey lover, as well as I. We'd go on trips once or twice a year to see an NHL game or two. We had great times in Pittsburgh, St. Louis, etc.
