Younger guys probably don't know this, heck I'm 53 and I didn't know it til about 10 years ago, but back in the 1960s and before, basketball officials were essentially free agents. Coaches had the ability to secure whatever officials they wanted, or could get, for their home games. If social media was around then, these boards would light up, huh?

 

Ohio was like this not real long ago.

Tommy Thompson was a great ref, Ernie Liggett used to hop and give the traveling signal better than anyone. Doc Morris was also a great guy who would cut up with ya a little while inbounding the ball. RIP Doc.

I got into a fight in a JV football game. I weighed about 145 pounds at the time. Doc Morris picked me up and literally carried me off of the field to the sideline.

By the way, while I haven't talked to Chappie today my guess is he's not interested in being referred to as "former."

Chappie is a guy who generall is positive and looks to be really enjoying his job. He's been doing it for a long time as I remem)er him doing my games in 87-89.

 

I ran into him at The Party Source One day where he works and we chatted, he helped me pick out a good Bourbon, Evan Williams Single Barrell.
