Cincinnati 48 Duke 34

UC hung tough. Entertaining game. Anyone who bet on UC had to overjoyed by the last minute. No quit in either team.

Coachy Cutcliffe at halftime said very animatedly that UC showed poor sportsmanship when a UC player subbbed in late as Duke was attempting a 53-yard field goal at the end of the half. The kick was good but the penalty had stopped play, so the kick had to be attempted again, this time 5 yards closer. Of course, this kick was wide left by about a foot. He felt as if UC was trying to ice the kicker without using a timeout. The announcers disagreed, saying it was just poor management on UC's part resulting from the reduced coaching staff. I agree with the announcers. I think the whole icing thing is old hat and not as effective as it once was although, whether it was intentional icing or not, it worked last night.

Why did the penalty stop play?

It occurred prior to the snap, just barely, but before the snap. I think Duke got jobbed on that one. Congrats Bearcats on winning a game that was fun to watch.

I'm assuming substitution infractions stop play.......maybe if they're detected soon enough? Like illegal procedure.

I don't understand why it wouldn't be like offsides where you can take the penalty or the result of the play.

Obviously that is not the case with a substitution infraction. The problem is that they stopped play when the penalty was called; therefore, it had the same effect as a timeout.

I'm not sure whether Cincinnati did it intentionally to ice the kicker because they were out of timeouts, or not. Cutcliffe definitely thought so and if UC used the infraction that way, the NCAA needs to change the substitution infraction, making it a refusable penalty and not something that can stop play when it occurs.

IMO, David Cutcliffe overreacted. If the ragtag coaching staff he was up against did manipulate a rule to their favor, good for them for original thinking. Tuberville may want to consider keeping the one who thought of it on.

It was good to see Cincy comeback and win with all of the stuff they are going through right now.

I was glad to see Duke make it to a bowl game.

Substitution plays are dead ball fouls they blew the whistle before the kick.

I liked the announcers idea that a substitution infraction with no timeouts left is an unsportsmanlike penalty.

Uh, I'd much rather my opponent kick from 53 yards than 48. To claim it was done on purpose (when studies show that icing a kicker is of EXTREMELY dubious value even when it doesn't directly benefit the opposition, as it would have in this case) is ludicrous.

Agreed, not sure how everyone is overlooking that.

So far the most enjoyable game to watch. Congrats to the team and especially #91! What an awesome season.
