If you guys call this good def & enjoy this style of basketball then you probably among the few who enjoyed last yrs sweet 16.

 

The total pts/game in last years sweet 16 was 100.6/game. This was the lowest by far since 1948 when it was 96.5 pts/game.

 

Just for comparison 1988 what many consider one of best sweet 16 ever...Ballard with Allan Houston & clay Co with Richie farmer...sweet 16 avg total pts/game was 143.5. Back in good ole days we played basketball in & mot rugby...lol.

 

Spindoc...I agree ours views not that far apart..if I may ask what region are you watching that is calling games so closely?

I watch many regions but mostly 16th. We have some really terrific officials like Lyle, Hall, Barnett and Greenhill. Ward and Taylor and Sublett are all solid as are many others. Now we have some who stink like everyone. I won't name them, frankly, they don't need named, they're easy to pick out.

My thoughts were never to imply that refs are not good. They just need to call more fouls.

By all accounts, Lewis County is a great place to see a lot of fouls, maybe you would be happier watching hoops there.

Talking with a friend of mine on Sunday after the AC / WV game and he said that we should get our kids and personal trainer instead of a basketball trainer because the strongest kid wins. :thumb:

That is correct, the game has changed dramatically the past twenty years.

FBD ......if this style was played back in our day you boys over on the river would have put a serious "hurt" on a small town skinny post player...lol!

I was a skinny wing/post player over twenty years ago. I scored several points in high school, but would not be able to do it today unless I could adapt and adjust.

Here's a little perspective from a non-partisan on the subject of our officials. This is a text from Rob Fulford, the head coach of Huntington Prep with regard to the Boyd County Roundball Classic:

 

Just wanted to thank u for everything! Tourney was great!! Not sure who the refs were but they were great for both nights.

 

 

On Friday vs. Walnut Hills the crew was Hall, Ramsey and Barnett. On Saturday the crew was Lyle, Barnett and Sutton. All from the 16th. I do wish we got to see Sutton more. We haven't seen him much this season but I think he's outstanding.

I've always said that Lyle is solid. Wish he was still over here.

I thought that this was an ugly basketball tournament. Close games, but not great basketball. It seems like teams basically spread the floor and do the dribble drive. That's fine, but it leads to a ton of contact on drives. The last five minutes of MC vs. Hopkinsville had 2 field goals. The rest were free throws from guys driving to the basket looking for something to be called on the shot. To me, that's ugly. Ball movement was non-existent. Great individual players, probably some of the best overall at the tournament for years, but not any great teams.

The game has changed. It's not the Princeton offense anymore and there's not a new version of Hoosiers out there. The game underneath is physical. Strength is equally, if not more, important than skill underneath. I understand that basketball purists don't like that. However, the game is ever changing to resemble the college game.

 

As for the commish, my guess is that the bottom line will look good, so the play must have looked good.

And in reference to mcraycraft's post, knowing his allegiance, I mentioned it in the game thread but will do it again, I thought Prewitt handled the physical play way better than Willis did a year ago. As a matter of fact, he handed out some very physical play of his own. I left very impressed with him and even more convinced he's more than prepared for the next level and style of play there.

The game has really changed since when I played. I still think that the game is too rough. And I have said this to people around me all season, not just the state tourney. And I know some people will say, "they better get use to it if they are going to play at the next level". That is fine for a senior (17-18 year old), but are we expecting a 14-15 year old to "be ready"?

I AM VERY HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!! What are you trying to say? Did something happen this year that hasn't happened in years past (other than go to state)? I saw an entire team excited to be playing at Rupp. Every member of the team had their name in the program, listed on the t-shirts and get to be a part of this exciting event. Not just the 15 on the bench (and for those that do not know. Sometimes Happy dressed as many as 21.) I saw a Pep section that won the "Harlem Shake Contest". I saw our "Go Guard" competitors win every time. So yes. I AM THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!
