Don't get me started on the "flow of the game" CRAP! I use to hear that from officials and it drove me nuts. What is flow of the game? If the kids get whistled for fouls and travels, they will learn to stop doing it and the games will get better. Who determines the flow? The REF??? The coach?? THe players? I have a simple philosophy. Call the game! If it is a foul call it!!! Refs use to say that if the handchecking didn't alter the dribbler they weren't going to call it. If i am 5'10 and way 155 lbs and i have a 6'1 175 lb person guarding me, he can dictate every where i go with a nudge. I have to keep my dribble and veer away because if i get to deep or bumped to hard, i will lose the ball because he is stronger than me. So i don't go in there and when i don't go where i need to go then we can't run our offense and the defense wins! Bigger, stronger, and faster is all you need to be now! Tell me the last team that everyone fell in love with watching because of offensive execution?

Basically the hand checking & physical plays has ruined the game last few years. Now suppose to clean it up.

In the 8th region I have seen nothing different. To call 2 team fouls in a half on a team that plays a style like Anderson Co is ridiculous. Then in 2nd half the refs are yelling at the players because the play got extremely Chippy. Well guess who set that tone in 1st half!

I completely agree with comment about Bernie, not only talk to you but also set tone early. Which makes today's situation even more head scratching considering he is director of officials in 8th region.

Another one of my pet peeves...waiting to see if ball goes in or not before calling a foul. Like someone stated earlier a foul is a foul when it is committed. Call it that way players & coaches will adjust. The "flow" has been ruined by the physical play not too many whistles.

The Walton-Verona/Anderson County game tonight was absolutely brutal. The entire night was a wrestling match.
As are all Anderson County games, and will continue to be that way as long as Coach Drury is there.
I was at the Anderson Co and Walton game and I agree with weakside. There was a foul every trip. You can't run a cut without getting body blocked. I hated watching it.
I know you weren't surprised that an Anderson game would look like that. :sssh:
Really? Have you ever seen the physical play in the paint that never gets whistled? Hands on each other, pushing, etc. out top -- if you slightly bump a player it is a foul.
There are basically no rules in the paint in the 8th Region Tournament.
.Spindoc...I would argue today's ky high school game much closer to the peach basket days than say 15, 20, even 30 yrs ago.

Avg totals pts/game in last yr sweet 16 was 101...in 1997/98 avg total pts/ game 131 with a championship game score of 89-78.

Today's game not skilled basketball....battle of most physical...it is not enjoyable to watch & attendance @ sweet 16 proves that point.

I would guess yr S/K won state or mason Co or clay Co days in late 80's scoring per game even higher without 3 pt line. Plus I'd say attendance back then atleast doubled last yr sweet 16.

Hand & body checking in today's game make it impossible to run a half court offense & very non entertaining game.

Had a parent tell me he was the hack guy who used his 5 fouls to frustrate the other teams best player. His quote "in today's game I would never foul out & be 1st team all-state".

Old School I'm not denying some of that happens. Absolutely it does. But here's my perspective, I think that offense has changed. How many times are we gonna hear that we've lost the "art of the jumpshot"? You know why? Because kids are bigger and stronger and can get to the basket. I'm sure the ESPN highlight dunks have had an influence on the culture of basketball but frankly, the offensive strategy is to drive until you can't then dish if you draw help. So, how are you supposed to stop that without some body contact? Surely we can't just have our kids ole' the offensive player to the basket because we allow no contact. What would stop all of that stuff is for offenses to move the basketball better and to teach players to move without the basketball and be able to make a jumpshot, as crazy as that sounds. If we tighten up the calls the way you suggest it sure would cause higher scores because it would literally handcuff defenses because they would essentially be whistled every time they made contact if I understand you correctly. We would be mired in a conglomerate of 2-3 zone defenses and basketball would be even more unbearable to watch.

Personally, I can't foresee the college game changing and if we continue to call every touch foul 20 feet from the basket (and let the grabbing go under the basket) the game of high school basketball in KY will go backward, not forward.

As for the state tourney, I think our economy has everything to do with the attendance issues, not the quality of basketball at all.

Here's another thing, and I mean no disrespect to the player, but Willis and BE cried about the physical play and that's what this is about. Did Rowan or Southwestern or Johnson Central cry about the physical play? If they did, would it have mattered to old Julian? Because a skinny kid who can't play with the physical contact that he's gonna get at the next level (times 10) now we get a "mandate" that we call the ticky tack stuff. All I can say is uggggghhhh!

FBD ......if this style was played back in our day you boys over on the river would have put a serious "hurt" on a small town skinny post player...lol!

Spindoc..completely agree with your NBA & ESPN comment. But I'm sure you & like all of us were taught to play defense feet & portion & not use your hands. In today's game a 6'0 linebacker on fball team has advantage guarding a 6'3 skilled basketball player.

And I guess obviously we are watching games in different regions....nothing ticky tack being called 8th. Once again Anderson Co. Playing pittino style with 2 1st half fouls...like the barnyard games....no blood...play on!

Spindoc...also agree if defensive player moves feet & has position nothing wrong with using body...but a less skilled slower but stronger kid can use atleast one hand & alot of times get away with 2....huge advantage defense.

Just get the hands off...both hands... clean up post play say 25%..would put skill back in game. Teach kids to play defense with feet & body position not hands.

I agree with what you say. But there is gonna have to be contact with the offensive player to some degree. And I don't have a single issue with a hand on a kid. Neither does the rule. Arm-bar that impedes a player is another story. I think we are closer to what we'd like to see than you think.

And again, officials that were good before the Julian doctrine are still good. In those guys, I haven't seen much difference in their interpretation of or enforcement of the rules. And I'm glad.

Sounds like good D. Check a cutter, forearm in hip, bodying up, and no easy lay ups.

Talking with a friend of mine on Sunday after the AC / WV game and he said that we should get our kids and personal trainer instead of a basketball trainer because the strongest kid wins. :thumb:

I agree that you should get a personal trainer as well.

You got to be strong if you are going to successful, especially down low. It's a physical game.

Just my opinion from when I used to be a big strong player in the paint. :jump:

I was at the UK game this weekend and it was a wrestling match every trip down the court for position.

If you guys call this good def & enjoy this style of basketball then you probably among the few who enjoyed last yrs sweet 16.

The total pts/game in last years sweet 16 was 100.6/game. This was the lowest by far since 1948 when it was 96.5 pts/game.

Just for comparison 1988 what many consider one of best sweet 16 ever...Ballard with Allan Houston & clay Co with Richie farmer...sweet 16 avg total pts/game was 143.5. Back in good ole days we played basketball in & mot rugby...lol.

Spindoc...I agree ours views not that far apart..if I may ask what region are you watching that is calling games so closely?
