I'm interested in members thoughts and hopefully their posts that actually know her. Surely some people on her know her.

Doesn't the teacher in question have it backwards? I thought I saw in another thread that the President was our savior or some such thing.

The teacher missed a GOLDEN opportunity to have a real discussion with kids.

She could have taken that statement, written it on the board, and then led a discussion about it.

Instead, she turned it into a political moment and completely failed her kids.

Five gets you ten that this incident won't have the "BGP legs" that the Jamie Foxx joke has.

How do we know she didn't? Did I miss that in the article?

I could be guilty of assuming but I would also assume the article would have stated that she put it up there and then had a discussion about it. I didn't get that vibe from the article.

I assumed that a student said that was on the board, told someone up the foodchain and that's when the ball rolled downhill for the teacher. While I don't agree with the statement obviously, I don't think we can assume that she didn't have a discussion about the topic with her students. I'd like to know more about the story before we totally castigate the teacher.

As a matter of fact, it may be a knee-jerk reaction by the school for fear of litigation and more negative publicity. It's entirely possible that the teacher wrote down the statement from the student in an attempt to discuss it intelligently. But we are so freakin' quick to jump to conclusion. It's also entirely possible she made a ridiculous statement and needs reprimanded. Again, not enough info.

Fair enough.

I assume we agree that if she did NOT have a discussion about such a statement then she did miss a great opportunity to have kids think and discuss, correct?

Note: I am checking with the writer of the story to see if she knows.

Sort of what I was thinking. The article makes it sound as if she just randomly wrote down that message for everyone's viewing pleasure.

If that is the case, I am fine with a week long suspension. Hopefully she is not that careless of a teacher though.

I took the article to mean she put the statement up there to encourage discussion, or perhaps to reveal the stupidity of the statement altogether. If she wrote it for one or both of those reasons, I think the teacher's dismissal is unfair.

If that is the case then I withdraw my initial statement.

She wasn't dismissed as far as I can tell.

Wait a second...I screwed that up. She wasn't dismissed. My bad.

Still, I don't think a punishment is necessary. Clarification perhaps, but not punishment.
