November 27, 201213 yr Without more information and context, it is difficult to say if this was inappropriate and should have been punished. It says in the article the statement was made by a student during a classroom discussion and the teacher wrote it on the white board but it wasn't part of a lesson plan. I have to think since she was reprimanded that the teacher wrote it to make some sort of statement either for or against the student and that is why she was reprimanded. If it was written during part of a lesson plan and/or legitimate classroom discussion, I don't think she is reprimanded.
November 27, 201213 yr If she wrote it to spark discussion why hasn't she spoke out to say so in defense of herself. South Laurel? Yeah. She was sparking discussion. Suuuuuurrrreeeeee.......... Edited November 27, 201213 yr by PurplePride92

I think it's hard to nail down what her intent was simply by her locale. I do believe if she wrote this because she agrees with the statement, she should be dismissed. You can't have that kind of nonsense in a classroom.

I believe many teachers make their political leanings known and I have no problem with it as long as they are even handed in how they teach and deal with students.

I don't have a problem with a teacher making his or her political leanings known. My favorite teacher in my K-12 years was a staunch Democrat & he clearly made that known. But saying "you can't be a Democrat & go to heaven" is beyond making a political view known IMO.

I am in the reprimanded camp. I wouldn't want to see her lose her job over this.
November 27, 201213 yr I agree. I am in the reprimanded camp. I wouldn't want to see her lose her job over this. I would consider firing a reprimand.

What if she wrote the statement on the board and said, "Does anyone really believe this?" We just need to know more about the details to make a fair judgement.

I agree with that, which is why I said what I said earlier. I took this to mean that she was trying to spark discussion or just to ridicule the statement altogether. Her motive for doing this is the deciding factor.

November 27, 201213 yr Would anyone feel any differently if the teacher was a registered democrat? No. That has to be a model of decorum in the classroom. If she doesn't write it in the board this thread doesn't exist.
November 27, 201213 yr I would consider firing a reprimand. I guess in the literal sense. Where I deal directly with reprimands and firings here at work leads me to believe there is a huge difference. Trust me.
