November 27, 201213 yr Humor was used as the vehicle. Otherwise, you're saying Foxx believes exactly the words being used. He used humor to convey his message. He used exaggeration to convey his message. While exaggeration can sometimes be humor, I don't think that was his intent here. His goal was to "rally the troops" so to speak. It's like when they called John Wall "Blue Jesus" during his time at UK. If you introduce him as "Blue Jesus" you are using exaggeration to generate applause; not humor.

I call that "semantics" but fair enough. The bigger issue is the knee-jerk reaction of those saying he was placing the POTUS above Jesus.

November 27, 201213 yr If humor was the intent, laughter would have ensued. The primary response from the crowd was one of applause. We are naturally sarcastic and that was done collectively and deliberately to make America squirm. We do stuff like that sometimes.

November 27, 201213 yr Author       Wait, a comedian says something and it's taken seriously? What the hell is wrong with this world? Sorry, but neither you or Clyde get the point. It's not that it was said in jest or thought to be serious (have to correct Clyde as to the intent of the thread), it's that it was tasteless and offensive to some Christians. And regardless if one thinks their way of thinking is superior to others, they don't speak for everyone. Obviously it struck a nerve with many, some things aren't as funny as intended or funny at all to some. They don't need to be treated like they're some kind of pariah because they think jokes about Jesus (especially comparing a politician to Him) is out of line. I understand their feeling. So...yep...what the hell is wrong with this world?

So...yep...what the hell is wrong with this world? I get the point. I just don't get offended by ANY joke a COMEDIAN makes and I think anyone who gets offended by anything a comedian makes is too tightly wound. I don't care if it is a Jesus joke, a gay joke, a black joke, a white joke, a Latino joke, a handicapped joke, an Obama joke, a Romney joke, a republican joke, a democrat joke, a woman joke, a religious joke.....a joke is not to be taken seriously or even meant to be taken with taste or class. I could understand if Joe Biden said it. Or Jesse Jackson. Or Al Sharpton. Or the crazy Obamaphone lady. Would completely understand. Anyone who takes anything Jamie Foxx says at The Soul Train Awards Show is looking for something to cry about. Period.
November 27, 201213 yr I don't take that as him trying to be humorous. Pretty scary...now Obama is elevated to a god status? Hey, I love comedy, I have my doubts that what we're seeing here. If you can't imagine any Christians being offended by this, think again. The above posts are the basis for my contention that the original issue was not poor taste in humor but, rather, the elevation of the POTUS to be above Jesus.
November 27, 201213 yr I find it in poor taste. Am I offended? A little. But, I'm not going to put ashes on my head and wear sackcloth about it. Is he a comedian? Yes, but he is making a political statement here and using God to assist in that endeavor. Do I really think that he thinks POTUS is our savior? No, but he is using that comparison to make his statement. What would the reaction be if a comedian had make similar claims about one of the previous presidents? There would have been complaints and I'm sure it would have been covered by the media. The Dixie Chicks found this out when they decided to make a political statement about a, not so popular, president at the time. I love comedians, musicians, actors, and even some talking heads, but I just wish they would find out that I don't care about their views on politics, religion, or word issues. I have that stuff covered and just like them for what they do, not what they think.
November 27, 201213 yr I mentioned it earlier, but some people referred to John Wall as "Blue Jesus" when he was at UK. I am a committed follower of Jesus, but wasn't offended by that. Other Christians would say I should have been offended, but I wasn't. I didn't really like the name, but I wouldn't say I was offended by it either. In that case & in this one, I see it as an incredible exaggeration of someone's ability.
November 27, 201213 yr Tebow is Football Jesus and Zack Galifianakis is Fat Jesus. Never heard any complaints about that.

This is more a statement laced with sarcasm aimed at the people who believe that Obama supporters think Obama is Jesus. Nothing more nothing less. He said it to make those people mad and it worked. He's laughing at them all right now.
