The company I work for had meetings with our health insurance company last week and they painted a very bleak picture starting in 2014. The company's expense is going to take a big upswing, therefore the employee would also face a large increase. :irked:

If I am a stockholder I am calling for the CEO to shut his pie whole because he is costing me millions for his political involvement. Also note that his base compensation goes up about $150,000 a year. How many of his employees are rolling in that kind of dough?

His statement was addressing the issues of his franchise owners. Papa Johns corporate does not pay the people he was talking about. If people want to hurt their neighbor they can quit buying the local Papa Johns. It is likely owned by someone locally or regionally. The franchise fee will still flow to Papa - until the franchise goes bankrupt.

There are already groups popping up to support him. As I said with ChickFilA I think that's a short-term win vs a long-term win.

No argument. However, IF they are getting him going on it then they're not very smart.

If you believe it will hurt their business it's not smart. However, it's getting publicity on a problem they're facing. Enough publicity combined with the number of people wanting changes made could result in pressure on the congress to tweak it some. I don't think it will hurt their business so I don't see a downside.

Earlier it was mentioned that we should look into Germany's insurance system. Since I work for a German company, work with a lot of Germans, go to Germany often, etc.....I did. Some brief takeaways:

 

In general, their system is working pretty well. Access and quality of healthcare is good and covered by government and paid for by taxes.

The comparative tax situation: Average tax burden in Germany is between 42 and 48%. For this, their are medical benefits, including post retirement benefits, etc. and university can be free.

 

Our tax situation for a middle class working family: FIT ~20% - 33%, FICA 7.65%, SIT 5%, Local 2.5% = 35 to 48% with NO health insurance.

Add private (or company sponsored health insurance on top of that for ~10%. College $!$

 

Question is how can their government provide their socialized medicine and services (and paid university) for considerably less cost than our government?

 

Lastly, freeloaders are becoming a larger problem and Germany, and there is increased dissatisfaction among the payers about this issue.

We have military scattered all over the world, including Germany. We spend billions each year trying to be the police officer of the world. Germany tried to do that on a couple of occasions last century and both failed miserably. The Germans don't spend too much military and haven't since 1945.
