Companies cut hours - citing Obamacare

Featured Replies

You know, at some point these kinds of comments have begun to feel insulting to me. The implication that I and others can't look at an issue and feel differently are lacking in either intellect or "sense" is simply a slap on the face.

In this particular issue, there are companies out there who were offering benefits to their PART TIME employees decades ago. There are companies out there who are NOT looking to cut hours, close businesses or in any way negatively affect their workforce. It will be up to each business owner to decide what is best for their business. But there are models out there to look at that have successfully grown their businesses while offering health benefits. No one seems to wants to consider those, though.

Maybe folks don't have the intellect or sense to understand them.

Heck, I was complimenting you.

Republicans say no one has any responsibility, Democrats want everyone to be responsible for everyone.........

My apologies. I missed it. I meant to put a smiley up. :D

The problem with trying to compare one industry to another is that you can't. Each industry is constricted by what their customers will pay for it's product vs it's competitors. Small businesses in some industries can get away with price increases, others can't. The businesses that are going to have hard decisions to make are those who are just under or over the threshold. One thing that you can take to the bank though is that these businesses already have looked at those other businesses that are offering benefits or not cutting hours. There absolutely is no one size fits all, even in the same industry.

Or maybe they have and they don't work for a particular business or industry.

Businesses that are highly automated and thus can produce with less employees will have an increasing competitive advantage. In addition to my day job, I own a service business employing on the average 15 employees. We are known to be a very good quality provider of services. Since acquiring the business in 2006 (bad timing huh?), economic woes have cut the volume by 40%. It is a car wash, so I depend on disposable income. Gas prices have a very significant impact on the volume of car washes. Labor costs have increased 20% since 2006 for new employees as have public utility costs such as water, but due to the economic situation, prices cannot be increased to compensate. We cannot improve productivity so significantly to even come close to offset the increases. In essence, my day job funds this very expensive hobby business. I am one more cost increase away from closing the doors and putting 15 people on the street who are going to have a hard time finding jobs elsewhere. Last month, which was a poor one, where I lost considerable money, while my business and its employees contributed 12% of total revenue in various payroll taxes. Again, I am one more piece of bad news from shutting it down, and these people will be at the unemployment office and not paying taxes. This isn't a threat because I didn't like the election...it is a fact.

Not questioning anyone's intellect. But I have noticed like many Dems on this board , you seem to look through the prism of everything being seperated into a "group", like race, gender, class, etc... You fall into the new class of people, The Offended.:D Seems to me that most business are doing what they need to do to survive, adapting, and getting criticized by the rest of the entrepreneurs/small business operators on this board.:rolleyes:

A guy that owns some Dennys restaurants in FL is going to add a 5% surcharge to the bills AND cut hours.

After this gentlemen went national with his desire to add a surcharge many other Denny's restaurants suffered immediately from protests against the entire chain.

CEO called the franchise owner and expressed his concern. No surcharge anymore.

Is Papa John backpeddaling also?

Papa John's Backs Down, will Honor Obamacare

The franchises are where it will happen, if it does. My guess is they are already keeping hours on a part time basis anyway. Can't see too many full time positions in a pizza place.

Won't be a big problem for him, but the individual franchise owners could have a hard time doing it.

Can't imagine they will have much control over franchise hours anyway.

On a side note I now have two clients who will be cutting hours so as to keep under the limits. Others are considering it. It will result in more jobs as they hire more part time employees.

It may enable the company to avoid an extra cost, but for the big picture economy that doesn't really help does it because the total number of hours worked is the same, just split among more people IF the company can find the people resources?

Correct. It would make the unemployment numbers look better without a true benefit to the economy.

Good point.
