I'm glad this state is trying to push football, really I am, but this is CRAZY.

 

 

It is going to take a kid getting seriously injured in one of the "its football, extra football, the kids love it, its all about the kids, gives them something to be proud of, extra money for the program, 1-2 times a year a #4 seed beats a #1" games and the coaches, state, schools, and KHSAA are going to get sued.

 

I truly wish you could see how some of these kids are after games like this.

Phelps could have just forfeited the game, all teams have this option if they dont want to play it.

I also hate hearing the idea "its ok in basketball because everyone plays in their district." Thats fine but the last time I checked the districts in basketball are pretty close to one another. Normally at the farthest the next county over. I know in Richmond 44th district is all in Madison County. In football we have teams like Etown going to Bell County. Basketball coaches/fans would think a little bit differently about the basketball set up if they had to drive 4 hours to the district tournament.

The comparison to basketball is silly in my opinion. Way too many differences in the sport. Like I said in the other thread, this is a football problem that really has no comparison.

 

I will say that I'm glad Coach McPeek didn't make it 100+

Then the KHSAA and school district aren't real happy with you and makes the coach look bad.

Coach McPeek is a class act and called the dogs off early. Good Coach and even better person.

More schools need to drop out of district play and it would force a drop in classes, plus not to mention it would benefit Phelps program.

 

I think what East Ridge and Pendleton County's coaches/admin have decided to do is brilliant. Dropping out of district play and trying to schedule 3-4 other games a year that they can compete and/or win will help their program tremendously.

 

Why more people don't do it is beyond me.

Phelps dressed 15 kids if I heard it on the radio correctly.

If Raceland was in a district with Newport Catholic, LCA, and Farview you wouldn't be on your high horse about 4 seeds right now.

Only problem I see for any 1A school dropping out of district is who do you play?

 

Some schools are so small there is no one for them to "schedule down."

If you only have 14 or 15 kids at the hs level you need to just drop the sport..Nothing good is going to come out of it..

There have been too many four seeds make it to the region and beyond. If you don't want to participate in the playoffs, drop out of district play.

Pendleton County went 4-7 with 17 kids in district play and had a state semi finalist ties at halftime in the playoffs with 17 kids in 2007. They went 7-4 in district play in 2009 with 24 kids before the districts were changed. It is always good for kids to be able to play football.

Absolutely rediculous post. Of course Phelps wanted to be in the playoffs. No matter the score or outcome they wanted to be there. Nobody likes to get hammered but most like to compete. The dream of the big upset is what its all about. They're kids. The risk of injury is there every week. Not just against a good opponent. If they didn't want to play or compete against the better opponents and try to get better themselves they wouldn't be playing. Life is all about getting better. You don't do that by staying home when the going gets tough.
