Other thread got shutdown.

Score could have been 160-0.

I like football, my son plays, but he would not have played in this game if he were on this team. Fact.

I'm glad this state is trying to push football, really I am, but this is CRAZY.

It is going to take a kid getting seriously injured in one of the "its football, extra football, the kids love it, its all about the kids, gives them something to be proud of, extra money for the program, 1-2 times a year a #4 seed beats a #1" games and the coaches, state, schools, and KHSAA are going to get sued.

I truly wish you could see how some of these kids are after games like this.

Great life lesson for your son, "When its a no win situation, quit." Hope his marriage is perfect, job is perfect, children are perfect, otherwise he will quit, cause that's what he's being taught. Thank God his coach is a good rolemodel in guts and determination and seeing things through. If my son were on this team, he would PLAY...because we teach our children to finish what they start, and support their team. Don't wanna play next year, that's fine...but finish what you start!! So when the 6A title game is a BLOWOUT we should just drop the 6A title game?

Agree completely Harry, it you are so heavily outmatched and your numbers are fading...why not give yourself a chance to build some success and a program. I could see many small schools doing this. Shame Pendleton Co. isnt better, thats a large school!

The comparison to basketball is silly in my opinion. Way too many differences in the sport. Like I said in the other thread, this is a football problem that really has no comparison.

I will say that I'm glad Coach McPeek didn't make it 100+

Why is it better and different to see a 100-20 basketball game than a 69-0 football game?

Yep, could have.

Then the KHSAA and school district aren't real happy with you and makes the coach look bad.

No win situation.

Coach McPeek is a class act and called the dogs off early. Good Coach and even better person.

Does it really? I think there would be more that would be ok with it than you think.

1. If a coach knows its going to be a blowout, and chooses to forfeit (which I am sure would have to also be a decesion made at the administration level as well) wouldnt he be protected his players from potention injury, specifically the ones that might play other sports?

2. The forfeiting team would be saving the school district cost of transportation and the like.

3. The winning team could then go scout in person the game of the teams they would play the next week, send other coaches to other possible future games.

4. Kids of the winning team could get a weekend off of the grind to be kids (this could be a bad thing as well) before the playoffs

5. Kids of the winning team would get an extra week to heal up if there are any injuries.

6. Winning team doesnt have to deal with the ridicual that comes with blowing a team about by 50 plus points.

You 2 cats that think you know about how I raise my son about no win situations or anything about the situation Phelps is in, PM me.......

Your probably the dads that tell their son to be tough if they get 3 concussions....

Why is it better and different to see a 100-20 basketball game than a 69-0 football game?

Surely you don't consider the physical nature of a once a week game comparable to basketball. Or, maybe you do.

If you've got something to say then PM me. How you raise your son is your business and I didn't say anything about your son but I won't having mine not show up just because he's playing a good opponent. No...he wouldn't play if he were concust...totally different situation.

If the hitting is your concern, then the football team losing 69-0 needs to drop football. They are getting hit every week and I am sure they have lost by similar margins more than once before playoff time ever gets here.

The people here that say that a 3 or 4 seed should not go to the playoffs likely are not part of a program that has struggled. It's always someone from a school that always makes the playoffs that says " Only take the top 2 schools." If you did that you would have teams that NEVER EVER make the playoffs, numbers would drop, programs would drop out of playing. Trust me all you people out there that think that only 2 teams from each district probably never had to look at that kid who has played his last game and would probably give anything to play one more. Those are the same people that probably have never coached a kid that gave everything he had but wasn't good enough to beat someone out for a playing spot on a team. What should a coach do for those players? Tell them to quit, go home? Or should he keep that kid around try to change his life. People, football isn't all about winning and losing. Look at the big picture. It was a Friday night where kids were in a safe environment doing more than most of the other kids in their school. What's the harm in that. Kids get better at football by playing football. It's not about money, or a trophy or who gets into the game alot of time. The worst thing in life you can do is quit. Phelps did not quit. As a person who has ties to Phelps, since you all that say they shouldn't have played know so much why don't you go and help them. Move your kid there and see if you can overcome some of the things they have to sometimes. Maybe then you would feel differently.

No school should ever QUIT FOOTBALL. More life lessons are learned in football and being apart of a team than any other sport.

This is an excerpt from a Mike Fields Notebook column written after the first round of the playoffs last year:

Paris Coach J.J. Everage, whose Greyhounds lost to Beechwood 60-7, would prefer that only the top three teams in each district make the playoffs, with the district champ getting a first-round bye. He'd like to shorten the season by a week so the state finals would be Thanksgiving weekend. Everage also thinks five classes would be better than six, with 5A being a "super class." Did Paris get anything out of playing Beechwood? "There was no benefit," Everage wrote.

Gallatin Coach Tim Browning, whose team lost to defending state champ Newport Central Catholic 56-0, also thinks only the top three district teams should make the playoffs, with the top seed getting a first-round bye. While Browning thought it was a good experience for Gallatin County to face NewCath, he's not sure what the Thoroughbreds got out of it.

Boyd County Coach Lee Evans, whose Lions got mauled by Highlands 63-7, thinks taking only two teams from each district "would be perfect. Don't get me wrong. We like making the playoffs ... but, oftentimes, a four seed and most times a three seed do not deserve to be in the playoffs. Football is not like basketball. Getting blown out is not good in either sport but, in football, it often includes a physical beating, not just a beating on the scoreboard." Evans also thinks all teams should have to play in the classification dictated by their enrollment.

Washington County Coach Eric Sagrecy, whose Commanders were crushed by Glasgow 63-6, agreed that only the top two teams in a district should make the playoffs, "not because of mismatches, but because the playoffs are a reward for a good season, and you should have to play your way in."

Elizabethtown Coach Adam Billings, whose winless Panthers lost to Bell County 66-0, also thinks too many teams make the playoffs. Billings, who has coached in Wisconsin and North Carolina, said "playoffs should be something that your team gets rewarded for," and that "it doesn't make much sense to give a winless team a gift of the playoffs. In Wisconsin, you have to finish with a minimum .500 record in your conference to advance to the playoffs." Billings thinks the KHSAA should "completely seed each class 1-through-32, or split each class into regions based on location and then seed each region."

Caverna Coach Michael Garnis Martin, whose team got mashed by Mayfield 65-8, thinks the current format is OK, but he'd like to see travel times reduced. It was a long haul from Caverna to Mayfield last Friday. Martin, the grandson of the late Bardstown coaching legend Garnis Martin, liked the four-class system that he grew up with.

Simon Kenton Coach Jeff Marksberry, whose Pioneers got trounced by powerhouse

Trinity 72-0, said the only thing he doesn't like about the current system is that there are only 32 teams in Class A and 6A. "There could be an argument for lowering the number of classes." Asked whether there was any benefit playing a team as powerful as Trinity, Marksberry said, "As hard as it was on coaches, it was harder on the kids. The only positive from it is that you truly get a sense of how good you must be to compete at that high level."

Jackson County Coach Arthur Carter, whose team lost to Belfry 55-0, said he thinks it's "great" to let just about every team experience the playoffs. He said if the first round was a waste of time, "you would never have a four seed defeating a one seed," and that happened a couple times last week.

Maybe it should be double elimination. After reading your post I totally understand the benefits of 69-0 beatings and I think we need more of them.

Thank you for sharing that perspective. Great post! :thumb:
