As I said from the outset Highlands is in a tough spot, but I do think they schedule creatively (meaning they know exactly what they are doing and who they are playing.) The year they had their big win against Cincy St. X the Bombers didn't make it out of the second round in Ohio playoffs. I won't be suprised to see Hgihlands and Trinity play now since the studs will be departing from the Shamrocks.

 

Hopefully you and other Birds fans will see what san diego conquistadors and mexitucky and olmstead mean by not being able to have it both ways. Teams may not play Highlands for the same reason Highlands doesn't schedule other teams.

I think there are several reasons with the biggest being no one wants to schedule what in most years is a guaranteed loss. There is also the resentment, whether or not you feel it is perceived or real about transfers (Mitchell case) and kids that play their youth football at one place and end up at Highlands. Coaches feel that Highlands is taking from their talent pool and then beating them with said talent pool. Dale Mueller did have a pretty well deserved run it up reputation in the late 90's and maybe even a few years beyond but has backed off that stuff in a big way but the resentment still remains and the reputation is still out there. I think there is also an idea out there that Dale Mueller isn't as good a coach as people say he is because of the attitude out there that anyone can win at Highlands they just have to roll the balls out so to speak. I disagree with that because what he's done has taken Highlands to new levels but the idea is out there. Just my thoughts

I think you play the kind of schedule that you should being one of the top 3 teams in the state of Kentucky. Now after that my issue has always been with the fans that think you are one of the best teams in the south or midwest or whatever. You are not. As others have said, in most years Highlands would finish in the lower half if they were in the GCL.

 

This is the burden for Highlands. Too good for many, but not good enough for others.

 

As a small side note, I also think that perhaps perceived running up the score hurts when looking to recontract with teams. Look at last week-the Birds had a chance to run out the clock taking a knee. Instead they had 3rd or 4th stringers in but ran a play against Ryle that resulted in a long touchdown run. Then Ryle got the ball back and threw one complete pass (why they were doing anything was silly too), then a pass was picked for another score. Not the players in the games fault from my point of view. But also not suprised that less than a week later Ryle bails out on a scheduled game with the Birds.

So basically this thread is designed to say why hasn't Ryle renewed....or why won't Conner and Cooper play Highlands?

 

To reply like Leatherneck, but from a different perspective-they don't need to play Highlands to win 5A. Ryle isn't going to win 6A. Trinity is. They don't need Highlands.

 

The bigger question is and remains-If Highlands wants to be the best in the state, they have to start scheduling Trinity or St. X. (those schools by the way don't need Highlands either.) That way the Bluebirds can challenge themselves as athletes and see if they are the best. Try to see it from both sides. Highlands is awesome for a mid-sized Kentucky school. Outside of this realm, not so much.

 

The 5A schools don't need to play Highlands to win state; neither do the 6A schools. But playing Highlands early in the season would help the 6A and 5A players and coaches know what they have to get better at during the rest of the season to prepare for Trinity and Bowling Green in the playoffs.

 

I know you are hung up on Highlands not playing Trinity in the regular season. You've been scarily obsessive about it. We do scrimmage Trinity under game conditions. If we beat them in that scrimmage, I feel we'd have the same ability to make the claim we are the best team in the state as if we beat them during the regular season (assuming both teams went undefeated against Kentucky competition) . Likewise, if we don't beat them, we have no ability to make that claim. Why folks think the matchup has to be during the regular season to demonstrate what team is better (when the scrimmage is played under game type conditions) is simply bewildering to me. I've yet to read a Highlands fan say that if it had been a regular season game, we'd have beaten Trinity. I'm just glad we get to play Trinity early in the season, as it serves as a great barometer of where we are and what we need to do to get better.

 

Honestly, I think we'd perform much better against Trinity if we played them at the end of the season and our chances of winning would be better. But I'd rather play them at the beginning to help us find our deficiencies and have time to correct them before we play CovCath.

Your post is rather contradictory. On one hand you say Highlands did not run up the score and in the next breath say they were unnecessary. Please explain to those not smart enough to follow your logic. I know why Ryle bailed out and I have yet to see it disclosed in any of the many pages of nonsense that I have read regarding the HHS/Ryle game.

Well please tell me as I wish they continued the series. The players run the plays from the sidelines. The coaches should have called for the ball to have been knelt late in the game with no chance of Ryle coming back. 2 snaps and the game is over. So for the kids heck no they weren't running up the score-they were told to run the play on which they scored, and did so. Better sportsmanship would have been for the Bluebirds coaches to call for the victory formation.

 

To explain in the sport you often post in...basketball....if the Birds are down 20 late in the fourth quarter and the other team has their third stringers in and are still pressing don't you have a problem with that? I do. Is it the kids fault. No, not if that is what the coach is telling them to do. The coaches have to call off the dogs.

And you're admitting that they had their 4th stringers in and gave them an opportuity to RUN (not pass) a few plays of the varsity game and they ran off a long run (like 45 yards or something). Then a 4th stringer picks off a pass and you expect him to fall down rather than score. Wow. Where was the Ryle team when all this was going on?

 

Running up the score is unacceptable in my book. But that would be leaving starters in longer than they should and it sure doesn't sound like that was the case here. I have seen Dale take a knee on multiple occasions this year. I'm sure he wasn't expecting his 4th string offense to break off a 45 yard run. And on Defense, would you have preferred the kid just knock it down or take a knee after the interception. I think that would be more embarrassing than what actually happened.

Pressing would relate to passing down field with an open offense and trying to score. I look at handing the ball off to a 4th string running back from 50 yards away is the same as the bench bball player firing up a 3 late in a blow out game. I would have no problem with a bench sitter firing up a 3 in a blow out. Same as I have no problem with a 4th string running back trying to gain a few yards in a varsity football game.

Great points. I mean seriously, if a coach thinks an opponent using JV and third teamers is running up the score and embarrassing to his team, he should just stop the game and just say it's over. When you really think about it, isn't having an opponent's JV and third teamers take a knee approx 50 yards from the goal line so they won't score against my team more humiliating to my players and me as a coach than anything? I think so.

 

From what I know of Coach Warner (and really like about him), he is tough, hard nosed person. Would have made a great Marine. I'd be absolutely flabbergasted if the two late scores played any role in his decision.

Don't remember anyone saying it was too hard a schedule, just that Elder and St X back to back was not a good move as that was prior to platooning. Still would be a bad move today. imo

Have read the entire thread but I remember in 2006 the year CovCath beat HHS twice and then went on to win the state tourney many of you HHS fans said that Dale played too hard of a schedule and it hurt HHS!
