Oh that's how it went down. I didn't follow too many Duffy games during that Era. Yeah I had some really good friends that played under him but I just couldn't stomach how he was running the program. The program that I grew up idolizing wasn't something to be proud of during that time. State champs or not, It wasn't that impressive to me....

OK RCC9 so as not to shield the Highlands players from reality go ahead and schedule 3 GCL schools next year.

 

That is a fair (and predictable) post. The problem with it is, Highlands doesn't have to beat GCL caliber teams to win state. The N. Ky 6A schools have to be able to beat a Highlands caliber team (or better in Trinity's case) to win state. The N. Ky 5A schools have to be able to beat a Highlands caliber team (or darn close in Bowling Green's case) to win state. If a N. Ky 5A or 6A coach is not scheduling Highlands because his team can't beat the Birds, is he sending the message to his players they have no real chance of winning a state title? I think so but perhaps I'm seeing it wrong. Am I?

Now we all need to wish and hope they play again next year!!!!

 

You sure you want that? We are talking about probably one of HHS's most talented group of Seniors in probably 20-30 years across the board. Highlands is going to be scary good next year!

Because then Conner, Cooper and Scott most likely(assuming they are not 4A) have to play them in 3A along with Holmes and CovCath. The district would be larger and give more guaranteed games.

 

But then more schools would just take the Pendleton County route and elect not to play district games.

Brossart gets their reality from NCC, Camp Co, etc. I also don't see Brossart talking about being a great program. They are trying to get on their feet. They have a long way to go. But there are many programs that can be tested by HHS. Heck, why not every 6A school, 5A school or even the NCC's and Beechwoods that are on top of their division. Not saying the outcome would be great for them all the time, but they do have athletes that aspire to play at the next level and they do have classes that come through that have athletes that can compete with HHS. It also exposes them to a program on top. That goes a long way with athletes. A competitive athlete never wants to admit that others are better. They will go out and work their tale off to be better than the other guy. Then another guy comes along who is better. That same athlete goes out to make himself better than him...and so on and so on! If you don't play better competition, you and your competition become mediocre.

That is the crux of the matter in 6A. You don't have the opportunity to compete for a title in 6A. The only program that has even a remote shot is Scott Co which has a set of very special circumstances that allows it to accumulate enough talent to compete. Makes it very hard on retention.

I bet Highlands would be ecstatic to have the classes reduced to four allowing for more COMPULSORY district games. That is of coarse, they learned that T and X were placed in their class!

Right, but in the same breath you could say that Highlands can go across the river and find the same competition that you are calling NewCath and Beechwood out for not scheduling. Play great teams that will allow you to prove how competitive you are. It doesn't make sense sometimes. NewCath and Beechwood have to be mindful of numbers and preparing for a state championship. If there were scheduling flexibility, and the two could schedule Highlands when their numbers were up, and drop them when they were not, then it would make sense.

 

As has been stated by the very knowledgeable CGG12, NewCath attempted to schedule Highlands. Highlands didn't want to do it as part of the Skyline event, which is understandable. So, the effort was made. Eventually it will work out.

So basically this thread is designed to say why hasn't Ryle renewed....or why won't Conner and Cooper play Highlands?

 

To reply like Leatherneck, but from a different perspective-they don't need to play Highlands to win 5A. Ryle isn't going to win 6A. Trinity is. They don't need Highlands.

 

The bigger question is and remains-If Highlands wants to be the best in the state, they have to start scheduling Trinity or St. X. (those schools by the way don't need Highlands either.) That way the Bluebirds can challenge themselves as athletes and see if they are the best. Try to see it from both sides. Highlands is awesome for a mid-sized Kentucky school. Outside of this realm, not so much.

Obviously you don't understand the meaning of the post. Not to get in a spat between schools. More to understand the philosophy of others winning and their approach to competition. As a fan, I'd love for us to play a compete GCL schedule. Much more entertaining to watch! But the dead horse has been beaten on why HHS can't schedule too many of those games against teams like that.

 

But for your benefit...HHS would just get beat down over a course of a year playing those teams every week or even 3-5 weeks a year. HHS is just not deep enough or big enough to pound with those guys every week. Here we are talking about 1 game. And the team we are talking about is not a pound on you team. They aren't huge and have 2-3 guys at each postion that are just as big as the last one waiting to come in to pound on you some more. I told you, our kids get their benchmark and reality checks with the teams they have on the schedule (a GCL oponnent, Trinity, Cov Cath, Scott Co and even Boyle when they are on the top of their game). Heck, our JV plays just about a full GCL schedule, so they are seeing the talent levels as they come up.
