In 1982, I was a senior in high school and went to the last UK home game (vs Florida). As I was walking through the parking lot with my younger brother, a guy tried to give me his tickets on the 40 yard line.

 

I told him "no thanks, I have tickets." He had been tailgating for a while and was pretty liquored up. He said, "Would you take the tickets if I give you $10?" I was young but I wasn't dumb but I still asked, "Why would you pay me to take the tickets?" He replied, "This team is so bad that I want to be able to tell people that I had to pay to get rid of the tickets." He was still laughing his brains out when I left.

 

This is a true story. I took the tickets and the money. The Cats were 0-8-1 at that point and would finish 0-10-1. Commonwealth Stadium was probably half empty and they weren't even very concerned about taking up tickets.

Fran Curci's last season was in '81. And while that team went 3-8 I think, they did hammer Tennessee in the finale. I remember that Jeff Smith was a defensive tackle on that squad. Larry Smith would join him at UK a couple of years later at LB. Both were Washington County boys.

I also remember the interesting fact that in 1982 UK was 0-10-1 while EKU was 13-0 and 1-AA National Champions. It was great to be a Colonel back then. :thumb:

It was great to be a Colonel. Although Larry Kinnebrew had me worried about our dream season.

With Petrino at the helm this team would be 4-3. The losses coming to Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas. Call me crazy just my opinion.

It was great to be a Colonel. Although Larry Kinnebrew had me worried about our dream season.

 

He and Richard Dent on the Defensive Line. Roy told me after that season that there was really no way we should have beat that Tennessee State team but that EKU squad always found a way to pull it out. I'm not convinced that they were more talented than the '81 team but they performed in the clutch better than most any team I've ever seen.
