ItsSHOWtime
I know you havent watched closely when you say Tobler struggles with his left hand. I have watched him for many years.....
Clyde
I have watched him for many years..... Are you talking about dribbling or are you talking about shooting? He has the best off-hand shooting ability of any kid int he 9th. If I took someone who had not watched him play and had the watch him shoot jump hooks they could not tell me which hand was his strong hand. If I took someone who had not watched him play and had the watch him shoot jump hooks they could not tell me which hand was his strong hand. I have seen him play in middle school, throughout high school, and AAU. Whether its dribbling or a post move, he prefers going to his right or finishing at right side of the rim. I have not seen him use this left handed jump hook you are referring too. The majority if his post moves, especially this summer on AAU circuit, were power moves finishing to right. He plays as hard as anyone and rebounds with anyone in the region but his offense game is lacking to the weak side. This is just my basis why he I wouldn't put him in my top 5. I believe Campbell, Maniacci, and McDonald are better offensive players. Campbell is a special talent with his size but I think you will be surprised on McDonalds ability to score this season, may be more polished back to the basket player than Campbell. I still do not know if Padgett from Conner is right handed or left handed with those "swoop" hook shots he takes and makes.
FRONT OF THE RIM
While James Bolden (Holmes) is not on this list right now, I believe he will be if the list is "re-made" at the end of the season. I also think Tobler (Cov Cath) will be closer to the 5 spot by seasons end. And, just my opinion, Schulte will have a better season than McDonald at New Cath. Disagree. He has to either learn to play with his back to the basket or shoot from the perimiter. Right now he does neither that well while McDonald does both. I think he will be a force on the boards as teams will concentrate keeping McDonald off the boards(especially offensive) and this will open it up for Schulte. If he can hit some 15 footers the two of them will be a great high/low combibation.
FRONT OF THE RIM
Newcath should be #1 but they aren't "clear cut #1" by any means. They will have their hands full against teams that want to play uptempo and put pressure on their guards. Beuter and Seibert don't handle the ball well against pressure and they tend to force shots. Their front court also isn't good in an uptempo setting. Agree about ball handling and shot selection of the 2 players you mentioned, but Pangallo will take of the ball handling problem. Jester313
Seems like there is a lot of competition amongst the NKY big men in NKY and have seen most of them playing AAU this past season. I don't remember seeing Mcdonald play. If he id did play AAU does anyone know what team he played for? Just asking because he seems to be getting a lot of praise on this thread.

Jester313
What about Tobler. Just wondering what we are basing these rankings on? Was it last seasons play?
PutMeInCoach
What about Tobler. Just wondering what we are basing these rankings on? Was it last seasons play? He had a pretty good AAU season. I wouldn't say he's top ten, but he has some skill.
Walter
If Campbell is back at HC I predict they should be preseason number 1. Realize they lost some key senior leadership but this years team will be more athletic and I think will be tough to guard. Holy Cross isn't even the best team in their district...with or without Campbell...let alone the region. 5 or 6 is a good spot for them to start the season. So what happens if they slow the ball down and get it inside? When you have 2 post players above 6"5'' who are the main focus of your team I would hope any decent coach would realize that and get the ball to them. Pangallo will be at the 1 spot followed by Beuter at the 2, Siebert 3, McDonald/Schulte 4 and 5. Although Pangallo will be young, only a soph, he is quicker than just about anyone in the 9th region. He arguably has the most upside of any guard besides Bolden in the sophomore class. They may have turnovers and may not handle pressure well but who is going to stop them down low consistently. If Newcath takes good shots and uses their advantage down low teams in the 9th aren't going to struggle stopping them. They are the clear cut #1 starting the season because they return the most and have 4 proven starters. Yes, Cooper has a great lineup with McNeil transferring in, Maniacci a sr, and a couple other good guards and Hawthrone (sp?) but they are yet to be proven. I would even give the coaching edge to Sullivan, because I think he does one of the best jobs in the 9th however going into the season and based off returning players I think you have to go with NewCath. Again, Newcath isn't "clearly" the best team in the region. Most experience? Yes. Most talent? No. The region is wide open this year. Anyone in the top 5 could represent us at Rupp and I wouldn't be surprised come March. You keep talking about Newcath's front court and their size. Boone last year is a perfect example that you don't need a bunch of 6'5 guys to win the region. I'll take the smaller, quicker guys any day. They played 4 guys who were 5'11 or smaller and Newcath had no answer for them because of their quickness. Do you really think Schulte or Seibert is going to be able to defend McClendon or Coston one on one out on the perimeter?? The key to beating Newcath this year is scoring early and often to set up a press and your defense to put pressure on the Breds. Outside of Pangallo, I wouldn't feel comfortable with anyone else bringing the ball up against pressure and he is still young and mistake prone. And speaking of proven players...Cooper returns just as much, as does Holmes and Covcath. Holmes returns two kids (Palmer and Coston) who have been starting since their sophomore year as well as a kid that has been seeing time since his sophomore year (Englemon). They return a sophomore (Bolden) that is arguably the most talented kid in the region not only for his age, but overall. They return several JV guys that saw time late in the season. (Jamanti Wilson and 6'5 Marcus Hill as well as 6'5 Chames who played a lot at HC last year) And guys like Armani Housely and Daquon Glover who are unknown juniors will also make a name for themselves this year with their outside shooting. Anyone who saw Holmes JV last year knows that those two along with Wilson can flat out fill it up from outside. This will be a fast and athletic Holmes team, but also one that shoots it well from outside. Also may be a surprise (experienced) addition to the roster that makes them even better. Covcath is in the same boat as Holmes and Cooper as far as returning experience but also having younger guys that will step up and make a name for themselves. This Newcath team isn't Holmes of 08/09 or even the Boone teams during that Holmes run...I wouldn't even put them in the same class as the Dixie team that won region two years ago. Newcath will lose atleast 2 or 3 9th region games. Edited October 13, 2012 by Walter

My point is, this isn't a Newcath team that will be a dominant force because of their size and talent...therefor they arent the "clear cut favorite." Do I think they deserve the #1 ranking? Absolutely. How long they keep it is a better question though.

Cooper is yet to be proven, seriously? Let's see, they return all but one starter plus they've added McNeil who can go for 20 at the flip of a switch, and Drew Shelton (6'5") will return leaner and stronger from football where he is the starting at Tackle . They won the district, beat the favorite in the 9th Region tourney in Dixie. What else is a 5-year school supposed to do to be proven? I hope the rest of the region thinks like yourself and the Jags will sneak up everyone again.
