The next one that comes to mind for me is The Scarlet Letter. But I think it was sandwiched between Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Catcher in the Rye in my English class, so I'm not sure all of the blame lies with it.

Me too. And Nineteen Eighty-Four. I'm curious what people hated about them.

I don't know really. I was interested in the whole thought crime, big brother is watching you deal, but the middle of that book was drudgery for me. I was considerably younger when I read it, but was put off enough that I wouldn't try it again.

We had to do the exact same thing DF did but I loved that project. If my memory serves me well it was enjoyed by the majority of my classmates as well.

 

Your teacher was probably better than mine on it then. It was hardly the only thing she had us do that annoyed me.

I bought the Lord of the Rings boxed set. As much as I love Fantasy/Adventure books I had to really struggle to read the first book and never even attempted the other 2.

Lord of the Flies and Wuthering Heights.

 

I also thought Animal Farm was overrated.

Also not a fan of Great Expectations.

I wasn't a fan of Great Expectations when I read it...but it's really grown on me.

Marcel Proust's " Remembrance of Things Past " very pretentious and boring .

"The Portrait of a Lady" by Henry James. Read it in a college English class and HATED it!

I also thought Animal Farm was overrated.

I'm honestly not much for Great Gatsby either...although I haven't read it since I was a good bit younger. I've been meaning to pick it back up and read it again to see it my opinion changes at all.
