Harvard scholar suggest Jesus was married

Featured Replies

OK, now I am going to go storm Harvard, burn the school flag, take the Harvard President hostage, protest unfairness and make the President of the U.S. stop stuff like this from being published because it hurts my feelings and goes against the Bible.

Oh wait, I'm not Muslim and I just believe in what I think to be true and go on with my life regardless what others say.

This isn't a crazy theory. It has been around for a long time. Mary Magdaline, supposedly, wasn't a hooker. She was Mrs. Jesus. I can see both sides of it.

So....let's just hypothesize that it's true. What difference does it make? How is this Anti-Christian? What impact, if any, does this have on Christianity?

Read/Watch The Da Vinci Code. This is nothing new.

I know it isn't the popular view and will probably be frowned on by many Christians, but I have asked several that exact same question. Doesn't make him any less miraculous, nor would it affect my faith in the slightest. In fact, it might make me believe more. I'm suppose try my best to emmulate Jesus. Well I'd like to think the person I'm emmulating was capable of falling in love and being married. Loving a woman, doesn't mean he loved his Father any less in my opinion. Good conversation at least.

Easy, it doesn't. I'm not sure why anyone cares if he was or wasn't. :idunno:

Agreed.

I think you guys are missing Mt. Ref's point, and he's got a pretty good one. He's pointing out that part of what makes our country great is that ours is a country where folks don't get all worked-up over "blasphemy" when it comes to Jesus/religious iconography the way Muslims do about Mohammed/The Koran.

However, it is also important to note that in our current religious climate, there probably are some fire-breathing preachers out there who are notching this kind of thinking (Jesus having a wife) as one more step toward End Times. We're just free to not take them seriously, whereas the largely uneducated Muslim population doesn't know any better because they're taught that "they don't see the need for no book-lairnin' anyways."

The text may have, if the real thing, been referring to the "Church" being the bride (wife) of Jesus.

MR ... that is one of your best posts ever on this site.

So, to answer my own question. The biggest controversy that I see is the effect of this find on the Catholic doctrine that priests are to be unmarried, because Jesus was a bachelor.

What effects are there on other denominations?

I can see that. Totally can see that.

Pretty sure that has been the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches' teaching since the beginning.

I think it could be problematic for some fundamentalist sects that believe in a literal interpretation of the bible, creationism, etc.

But I don't believe the Bible ever touches on the issue of Jesus being unmarried or married, does it?

It has.
