Why do we not have a viable candidate from within the sheriff's department or within law enforcement running for Campbell County Sheriff??? Our choice of candidates consists of 3 people with absolutely no experience in this area. Was John Dunn just that good that no one wants to take over and look like a failure?? I think not.

In general terms way way more work and responsibility for not much more pay.

I may be wrong but I believe the sheriff's department in Campbell County is more of a tax collecting/administrative thing versus a law enforcement thing these days. I don't think a law enforcement background is necessary to be sheriff in Campbell County anymore.

Also too, in most county situations Sheriff is not just law enforcement, they handled property taxes and the like as well.

In general terms way way more work and responsibility for not much more pay.

I'm not sure what it pays. I'm wondering if any of the candidates have the qualifications and training that result in certification as their website says. Not that I even know what those qualifications are! I'm just disappointed that someone from within, who knows the ins and outs, wasn't interested.

Pay is set by the state based on population and/or size of the county. I know a sheriff in a medium sized county that makes well over $90,000, and it is regulated by the state. Fiscal Court doesn't and can't pay them more. I know some counties make less but $80-90,000 range is close for most Sheriffs of larger population counties in the state.

 

If your county has a Metro Government then the Sheriff may not have a lot of law enforcement requirements. Tax Collections, Serving Court Papers, Providing Courtroom Security and out of state prisoner pick-ups are some of the duties of the Sheriff's Department outside of normal Law Enforcement. In many counties the Sheriff's Department is responsible for answering LE calls throughout the county in addition to the other duties listed.

I was thinking Henderson Co setour sheriffs pay.

How does NKU factor into that? I know the students probably don't count towards population, but still something I'd be interesting in knowing if that affects pay at all.

Does the CC Sheriff's office have the power to arrest people? Pull someone over and ticket them? They obviously carry a firearm since they provide security to the courts so do they have to go through the same training that other law enforcement officers must go through? Are they real police officers or not??? I guess I don't know too much about what goes on with this department. Time to educate myself!

Yes they have the same powers of local police or state police. In some counties with a county wide police force like Lexington they do less law enforcement and more procedural matters like court security, collecting taxes, handling seized property and picking up out of state fugitives and bringing them back to Kentucky.

I'm assuming they carry a weapon? Not sure that I trust someone with no police experience in the role.
