August 16, 201214 yr So I recently did a pretty big favor for a coworker recently, and today he gave me a thank you gift. He said he knew I was a big bourbon drinker, and Jack Daniels is the best bourbon he knows of. I graciously accepted the thank you and will likely re-gift it at some point, as it's really not a WHISKEY that I enjoy drinking, but anyway, it reminded me of a previous discussion I had at a liquor store a couple of years back. I ran in to the Kroger liquor store in Newport to get some Beam for a tailgating event I was going to, and I asked the clerk for a pint (they had the smaller bottles behind the counter). She said they were out of Jim Beam, and she grabbed a pint of Jack Daniels instead, putting it on the counter and saying, "All of these bourbons are the same anyway - just like Bud Light and Miller Lite, and Coke and Pepsi". ...apparently I didn't see eye to eye with that woman AT ALL. Jim Beam (as well as most bourbons) are waaaaaaay different from Jack Daniels, Miller Lite is better than Bud Light, and Coke is waaaaaaay better than Pepsi. I'll take Jim over Jack any day.

August 16, 201214 yr Actually, Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon... Although the product generally meets the regulatory criteria for classification as a straight bourbon, the company disavows this classification and markets it simply as Tennessee whiskey rather than as Tennessee bourbon. The difference between Jack and Jim are like night and day, nothing better than Jack and Coke. However, any bourbon/whiskey and coke are my drink of choice.
August 16, 201214 yr Good bourbon should never be mixed with anything but a very small cube of ice. As a rule if a bourbon needs a mixer to be palatable I won't drink it. Yes, I'm a 100% bourbon snob.

I would prefer, Jim mixed with some coke and would settle for a budlight. The rest fall in the same pecking order.
August 17, 201214 yr FWIW when I did imbibe in the wondrous liquid, it was Bourbon and only Bourbon all the time. Never got the taste for Jack...at all!!! So Jim over Jack Coke over Pepsi Bud over everything else Levis over Lee or Wranglers Ford over Chevy Heinz over Hunts Buttered over not Buttered Bacon over...well let's not kid ourselves...Bacon over everything!!!
