Who will replace Mike Glaser at X? Will Wolford??

Featured Replies

In Texas is allowable for the booster clubs to augment the coaches salary, that is how they get and keep quality coaches.

This is not true at the majority of schools in Texas.

The names I am hearing are on the short list:

Todd Walsh

Bart Bruner

Pat Chitwood

Stephan Lafors

And I am told the favorite to take over at X is:

Will Wolford

=============================

Anyone?

No chance Will would ever do it....he loves his life, X doesn't fit in the everyday.
Some folks at X (some of them denizens of this board) looked down their noses at Trinity when they hired from outside of Louisville. An acquaintance of mine who is a very vocal X alum told me to my face how Trinity had sold their soul to the devil and would do anything to win and that X would never do that. I really hope he is correct.

What they don't know, is that Beatty is part of Trinity Forever.....you can't put a price on that. Who cares that he hailed from Blue Springs, Missouri?

Telling one of the best coaches in the nation he has to make any extra money running a summer camp will end the process with said coach right there...

Disagree 1,000% right here...Beatty said no once, said yes the second time....he didn't get his own camp until about 3-4 years ago (Coach Lanmpley still has his, and they're both full).......it can work.

I think you are missing my point.

What I mean is a school telling one of the top coaches in the nation you get paid what any garden variety coach/teacher would get paid here and there will never be any supplemental income unless you do it on your own through a summer camp.

Now that? I agree with...for sure....the salary isn't the end all be all....there will likely be a car, landscaping amenities, etc.....you're right there.

We are on-board with each other.

I firmly agree with Rock Pride on this point. Although Will Wolford meets all the major criteria that St. X. is looking for in a new head coach, considering his current personal lifestyle, family with young daughters, and business interests, it just makes no sense for him to take a job as a high school coach.

In regards to compensation packages for a new head football coach, it is my firm opinion that St. X. will never allow any salary or salary plus outside fringe benefits packages which exceed normal teacher and administrative compensation packages. Tigertown wants to win ballgames as much anyone else, but they will never do anything to make it appear that athletic activities are held above academics. It is just not in the cards!

Last time I checked we live in a free market society. If the greatest math teacher on the planet needs $10,000 more in order to be hired and as a result 5 more kids come to that school the next year, isn't that a good business decision? T would probably have 50-60 fewer students (which translates to 3 fewer faculty members and a few less elective courses) if they hadn't dominated football like they've done for the last decade. They probably aren't paying Beatty enough. Do you sell out and hire a Petrino type? Absolutely not, but there is a balance to be struck.

Also, I personally hope that X makes a great hire. Both schools have great hard core fans, but the fair weather ones have stayed away a bit recently (just like T fair weather fans did in the 90s). It is in EVERYONE's best interest for a 31-27 game every year.

This is not true at the majority of schools in Texas.

But, it is allowed in Texas? Right?

I'm gonna play a little Devils advocate here. But if they are so academically inclined at St X what it he purpose of having competitive athletics at all? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but athletics is what brings visibility to all schools. It is especially a selling point at private schools. The football programs at both St X and T are what draws attention to those private schools. I'm not saying they should unload the bank to hire a football coach. But they are in competition for students as well as athletes and there is no excuse for them to not be on the same level from a pay scale perspective for coaches as their main competition (T). If they do not match or at least come close, they will not only fall behind on the football field, but it will eventually affect the desire of the entire population they draw students from to attend X. Am I wrong?

The two schools operate with different mission statements, under completely separate boards, and have a number of philosophical differences. That is not to say that one way is better than another, but they just march to different drummers in a number of areas.

WOW, Oxnard said something I can agree with. Write this day down.

I would also like to point out that it is being taken for granted the Coach Beatty is paid some enormous salary. I don't think there is anyone on this board that knows what he is paid. I suspect it is a lot less than some imagine, but I don't have any idea.

FYI (from each school's website)

Trinity's mission statement: “To provide students with a superior high school education in a supportive atmosphere based upon Christian values in the Catholic tradition.”

St. X's mission statement: "Saint Xavier High School, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers since 1864, engages young men in rigorous academic programs and extracurricular activities that foster respect, honor and service to God’s world."

I don't know that these offer insight into who the next coach will be, but it could stir some discussion I suppose.
