I'm not exactly sure how the sale of that property worked...but as I understand it, the actual Catholic Center building is still owned by the diocese, but the land around it s not. Then the retreat center is owned by someone else as well, but the buyer is now leasing it back to the diocese. I'm pretty sure that's how it worked out, at least.

Yep. I went to summercamp at Citiba....err....Marydale. You can still see one of the old cabins on your right when you drive down Houston Road from Stevenson.

If St. Henry was to start football, I am not sure that their school could handle the enrollment increase.

 

I think this, combined with their other successful athletic programs (and a desire to keep their funds going towards those) are the major reasonings.

Why couldn't someone enrolled at St. Henry play football at Cov Cath???????

I believe a big part of the reason is the administration at St. Henry. I don't think Principal Dave Otte has any interest in football. I don't think he wants football there. If the next Principal has any interest in boosting enrollment and football, I could see it being pursued. As long as Otte is there, I doubt it. Someone please correct me if they think I am wrong because that is just a gut feeling and is not based on any inside information.

My guess is boys soccer would be the only sport impacted negatively and the other sports most likely benefit by the school having football.

There is more than football that kids attend CovCath from outside of the feeder schools.

I know more than handful of kids that that made there decisions based partly on the lunches.

Many kids and parents like the all male format, and the work required in the classroom.

Also if football is part of the decision, many kids are in the middle school program and are connect to CovCath by the 5th or 6th grade.

St. Henry's not only would they need to start a high school program, but also a middle school.

So I disagree that St. Henry's would have a large affected on CovCath football, Holy Cross didn't.

I can't say I have " inside info" but have heard the same thing. In fact someone told me Dave said as long as he was there they are very content with soccer only. Just hearsay mind yoy, but sounds legitimate.

Not the case. Money for a football team and any facilities improvements required would have to be pulled from the high school's own funds. For example...Cov Cath's improvements over the last decade were from their own pockets. St. Henry would be in the same situation.

 

All of the money spent over the abuse scandal was from a combination of diocesan insurance and the sale of non-school and non-parish diocesan properties.

Just like in the NewCath situation, there is a financial component to that, that no one wants to talk about. At the end of the day St. Henry is just a pawn in a bigger chess game.
