I heard a gunshot and ran 5 foot to a tree and found my brother-in-law dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. I will never forget it. Had to tell my wife, her brother and my in-laws. It was nothing compared to having to tell his two young children. I had nightmares for a year.

 

When I was about 12 I saw a car wreck where a car hit a 18 wheeler head on. Two people were thrown from the vehicle and killed. I ran into the house and told my aunt and uncle.

I've never witnessed a "violent" death but I was with my grandfather when he passed and I tried to resuscitate a gentleman who had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Stunned by the results.

 

Not stunned by the results, but some of these stories are heartbreaking. One of the most sobering threads we've had here.

I've seen people die in about every possible way: gun shot, car wrecks, stabbings, overdoses, cancer, heart attack......................Oh, and there may have been a man that had a sexual aid in a hole in the couch and was pleasuring himself and had a heart attack.

 

One simple thing to remember: if a person says, "I'm going to die" or if they start praying out load, they are probably going to die. Almost everyone that has looked at me and said they were going to die, did, at least briefly.

 

You have to look at it as an honor to be present when someone dies, to be the last person they talk to, ask questions of, look to for comfort.

Based on the parameters, no I've never watched anyone die. My kids have though. Both were with large group of friends going to The Haunted Forest when they saw their friend's car get clipped by someone attempting to pass him. The watched their friend's car go airborne, land in the median and the driver was dead by the time the kids got to the car. They had to help remove 3 others in the car while waiting for the emergency vehicles to arrive. It was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to help my kids through. They were only 17 & 18 at the time.

Two actually , on Good friday in 1977 my wife and I were crossing the old Central Bridge over the Ohio River In Cincinnati . The River was in flood and really traveling fast . We witnessed an Elderly man climb over the side of the Bridge . I stopped my car and climbed from the roadway onto the walkway ,there was about a 2 foot gap between the 2 . When I got to the place where he had climbed over I looked down and he was holding on to the superstructure on the side of the bridge . I reached down and shouted don't , he looked up and let go , he landed face down in the river went under and came back up still face down . I got back into my car and drove to the Newport police Hdqs and reported what I had seen . As far as I know his body was never found .

The other one was when I was a kid . I grew up in Dayton Ky near Belmont Lake .I was about 11 and a group of us were walking up the gravel road to the lake to go fishing when a car sped past us throwing gravel and almost hitting us in the process .

Right before the lake there was a turnaround and the car was sitting there with its motor running as we walked toward the car we heard a shot and well the guy killed himself right there in front of a bunch of 11 year olds .

And, there was the one that died that would not even fit in the ambulance, literally, he couldn't be moved and had to be transported by a rollback. 718 lbs.

Not at the time, but ironically for the thread, "That that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".

I am a nurse, so I have seen my fair share. On a personal level, I was with my mother and mother in law when they passed on. I hope, when my time comes that my family is with me.

The only thing remotely close that I have witnessed is about 100 yards from the finish line at the Nashville Women's Half-Marathon a couple years back, a lady collapsed short of the finish line. They partially revived her but she died a few hours later. My luck with races is rather poor. Along with that one 4 other people have died at events I have been associated with.

Way more than I care to remember.
