May 21, 201214 yr https://twitter.com/#!/Braves/status/204577738546352129/photo/1 The Braves twitter page just tweeted a picture of "jewels" that are going to used on the side of each base honoring Chipper. I think it's really cool what all the teams are doing to honor him. It's sad to see him go. I hope he plays Thursday when I go to the game. I know Chipper is a great player and I have a lot of respect for him. But why are other teams doing all this? I don't really feel like I've heard of things like this in the past (doesn't mean it doesn't happen).

Like you said I don't ever remember teams going gaga over other guys like this in the past.
May 21, 201214 yr I don't see why some have problems with it. He has been a great player for a long time. One of the last few players that will start and end their career playing for only 1 team.

I don't really feel like I've heard of things like this in the past (doesn't mean it doesn't happen). He's a hall of famer who has been with one team his entire career. Probably well liked around the league as well (no idea, just assuming that).

May 21, 201214 yr Did anyone do it for Barry Larkin? And who's fault is that. Obviously it's up to each individual team and they all seem that Chipper deserves it.

May 21, 201214 yr Relax, I was just asking. I'm just answering it. I mean when all the teams started doing it I was thrown a little at first as well, just because you don't see it often, or hear about it anyway. Could be because he announced this was his last year, not 100% though.
May 21, 201214 yr I don't really have anything wrong with it at all. I just wondered what made Chipper more special than other players in the past (Larken, Ripken Jr.) or players in the future (e.g. Derek Jeter) to have these types of honors.

To be fair we don't know what will happen for someone like Derek Jeter. And I agree with SV that him announcing his retirement at the beginning of the season probably has a little to do with it. It would be weird for teams to pay tribute to someone who isn't sure if they're retiring or not .

Could be because he announced this was his last year, not 100% though. First of all Barry Larkin didn't want a farewell tour. Secondly it was done for Johnny Bench back in 1983 when he retired. He received a lot of great stuff from the other NL teams. I believe one team gave him a fishing boat.
