May 10, 201214 yr This is actually interesting to me, I'm currently on jury duty and of the jury pull they created 5 different jury panels of 6. Those panels then sat through 6 different short disability trials. As each one entered the jury area and were sworn in I couldn't help but notice that if each panel were on trial for being over weight(probably obese) and all it took was the majority of them to be obese every single panel would have been found quilty. I think I was honestly on the smallest panel but we still had a guy that probably weighed twice what I did. It's sad really.
May 10, 201214 yr If you don't want to read that long article I can sum it up, if you are overweight you need to eat less, end of story. And as far as what to eat (from the article), the latest clinical trials suggest that all of us would benefit from fewer (if any) sugars and fewer refined grains (bread, pasta) and starchy vegetables (potatoes).
May 10, 201214 yr Obesity does sadden me. Too many temptations in this world. Until there is the general understanding that what we put in our bodies is for first and foremost to fuel our bodies to run as efficiently as possible, and not a source of entertainment, we will never change. I generally eat pretty healthy and probably not what anyone would consider obese. But I definitely still view food as entertainment and also often as a reward. I'm a pretty big foodie. I think you can have it both ways if you are smart about it.
May 10, 201214 yr Put me with former, I have been paying a lot more attention to what I put in my body, I eat multiple meals a day, and I workout at least five times a week but like former I also look at some foods/meals as rewards/entertainment but try to do it in moderation.

That sums it up. I think that a lot of people need to know why and how those foods truly affect them. Once you figure that out, it becomes a lot easier to make eating choices. Just being told, "eat this, not that" doesn't get people to commit. Knowing that this corn syrup can not be processed by my body and will ultimately contribute to insulin resistance, which will ultimately make me fat, which will ultimately makes me obese will at least get some people to look at what is in their fat free foods

For as healthy as I am, I still eat a lot of junk type food. Part of my motivation for working out like I do is to enjoy these indulgences. There has to be a balance. But it is alarming at how many people have no concept at all about basic nutrition, calories consumed vs. calories burned, etc.

My co-workers baffle me when they talk about nutrition.
May 14, 201214 yr "Why America is Losing the Obesity Battle." Seriously? Bacon wrapped deep fried twinkies !!!!! MMMMMMM Bacon !
May 15, 201214 yr The problem with obesity in this country has less to do with goes into our mouths and more to do with lack of motion. Moving ones thumbs on a game pad is not exercise. That goes for children and adults.

May 17, 201214 yr Are you saying I spend to much time on BGP......man these bacon wrapped doughnuts are good...... Nothing was better for my personal nutrition than finishing school if for no other reason than my daily commute didn't take me through Germantown anymore and past Nord's Bakery where I have to smell them making those maple bacon doughnuts every morning. Sweet Lord they're good.

May 22, 201214 yr I try not to judge the obese, I have been blessed with a tall lean frame...but even then, if I don't work our and don't eat right, it gets way too soft and bulging in the wrong places for my liking. Then I make up my mind to eat right and step up the exercise. However, I see way too many people who just don't seem to care and too many who don't care enough to do anything about their weight. It doesn't get any easier either as we age. I was playing on an indoor, coed, recreational soccer team a few years ago, and we were in the season ending tournament...thus we had multiple games in a night. We had no subs on my team. We had this one lady...a very nice lady, I would add...who was a bit overweight and was limited as to the area she could cover on the field. I was dismayed between games of the tournament however, when the rest of us were re-hydrating, she went out and acquired a quarter-pounder meal which she ate between games. I knew the last game of the night would be tough.

Like it or not this is a huge reason for our health care costs continuing to sky rocket.
