How many High Schools have a weightlifting program for incoming freshmen?

The Fort Thomas 60 minutes is open to 6th and 7th graders also.

Is it still open to "non-football" players like it used to be...back in the day ??

Manual isn't allowed to have 8th graders lift until after the last day of school. I think Central has the same policy and possibly Male as well.

It is due to the application process and not knowing if a student has been accepted or not.

South Laurel has a program for the middle school kids. 6th, 7th and 8th graders come to the sessions 2 times a week in the off-season, usually Tuesday and Thursday. They first learn proper technique then test. After about a week or two they start fully getting into the program.

South High School has a class that the football players must attend but is open to all students. This is called a Zero Hour class and begins in the morning at 6:45. Having it in the morning cuts it out after school so it gives more time for practice during the season and athletes that play other sports like baseball, basketball, softball, volley ball, ect. can play their sports but not miss out on lifting.

Bullitt East will have 7th and 8th graders starting to lift next week.

Dayton has a program for 7th and 8th graders!

The younger group that works out on Tuesday and Thursday is open to anyone in the middle school. The 8th grade class is primarily the largest group to participate, but I've heard there are a few 7th graders. And yes, there a some boys that are attending but are not interested in playing football. It doens't apprear to have changed since Lumpy participated last year.

Good point FT. Although as you know, at Highlands 60 Minutes actually takes closer to 120 Minutes. With the amount of lifting and running (conditioning) the boys are up there for about 2 hours. I doubt the school board would support including it into the school day.

I did hear the turnout was good. Apparently there's some boys thinking they may play Frosh football even though they didn't play in the FTJFBL recently. Can't wait to see it all come together this fall.[/QUOT :thumb:
