FamilyTradition Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 The reason I'm asking is because Highland's Freshmen 60 minutes started yesterday. I heard that there was a good turnout considering that about 12 8th graders play basketball. I know of several kids that play basketball are going to lift when it doesn't conflict with games. I was just curious to see how many programs have something for the freshmen to be?
Tigertalker Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Hoptown started yesterday a 8th grade weight lifting team. They had 42 kids for the first day, should pick up some more after basketball is over. Hope to compete in two tournements. The varsity kids have been lifting since the Monday after losing to Bowling Green in the Regional Finials. The coaches were surprise they has so many young guys showing so much interest.
cshs81 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 CCH: No formal program for 8th graders yet many 8th graders show up after basketball season and work out. I assume that hasn't changed with Coach R.

I assume that hasn't changed with Coach R. That'd be kind of tough to do with the logistics of it. Since the kids aren't at the school and some don't live close to the school. You heard it here first folks: ADVANTAGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS!
Mayfieldsportsfan Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 That'd be kind of tough to do with the logistics of it. Since the kids aren't at the school and some don't live close to the school. Goliath Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I believe Ashland has an advanced conditing class for all football players, including current freshmen.
rockmom Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Trinity & X have it. An 8th grader is allowed to begin the program, after taking the placement test at the school they want to attend. From what I know, they are well attended.
stickymitts Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 So I guess you think that Mayfield Middle is next to the high school. 8th graders who want to lift after basketball season have to walk to the high school or get a ride with someone. Did I say "next to?" Nope, but I'm guessing the middle school is closer to the high school than Union is to CCH.
rockmom Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Did I say "next to?" Nope, but I'm guessing the middle school is closer to the high school than Union is to CCH. Well, most kids don't live near Trinity or X......
stickymitts Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Well, most kids don't live near Trinity or X...... So is it tougher for them to have a weights program because of that?
rockmom Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 So is it tougher for them to have a weights program because of that? No, they weight program is successful despite that.
stickymitts Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 No, they weight program is successful despite that. We're just talking middle school kids here. You're telling me that it's not tough to get all of the kids, from whatever school they're coming from, to X or T for weights that are going to play football the following year and are not playing basketball? If so, I find that amazing. Note: Tough does not mean impossible. Look, my point was (obviously some can't take a joke, BTW) that when your middle school is attached (or next to) the high school it is OBVIOUSLY easier to get the kids to a middle school weights program than if all of your kids are from five or six different cities from 3 miles away to 20 miles away. GEEZ! :irked:
FamilyTradition Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 I believe Ashland has an advanced conditing class for all football players, including current freshmen. Is this an actual class that they take during school hours? If so, Dale maybe ought to look into starting this class at Highlands.
oldonetechnique Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Franklin county allows both 7th and 8th graders to lift with the varsity, they are encouraged to participate, from what I hear the flyers carry about 15, 7 and 8 graders on a conistent basis in the off-season. The kids lift just like a varsity kid except they are supervised alot more and use light weights.
