How many High Schools have a weightlifting program for incoming freshmen?

Featured Replies

Everyone can take a joke but it gets old reading the stupid private vs. public comments and yes I do mean stupid comments. They have a forum for that.

So, can you or can't you take a joke? I'm not reading you to clear on this one. I'll consider that retracking since your initial post was talking about the middle school's proximity to the high school. :thumb:

He was sort of joking but in general his comment is true and relative to the thread.

It would be easier for a public school to start or maintain a weight-lifting program for 8th graders because of the relative distance from any middle school to the high school in a public school system. That is oppossed to a private high school that may have 5 to 10 feeder grade schools that in general aren't as close distance-wise to the private high school.

Another potential problem with use of high school facilities by noy-yet-high school students is insurance in case of an injury.

Is this an actual class that they take during school hours? If so, Dale maybe ought to look into starting this class at Highlands.

Yes, they take it as a substitute to a PE class.

Good point FT. Although as you know, at Highlands 60 Minutes actually takes closer to 120 Minutes. With the amount of lifting and running (conditioning) the boys are up there for about 2 hours. I doubt the school board would support including it into the school day.

I did hear the turnout was good. Apparently there's some boys thinking they may play Frosh football even though they didn't play in the FTJFBL recently. Can't wait to see it all come together this fall.

One small quible with the X and T info: It is my understanding that 8th graders may begin lifting after acceptance, not after taking the test. There is a several month time period difference in the two. The placement test usually occurs in early December, and acceptance usually occurs in March.Thereafter, lifting can commence.

I believe this may differ between Trinity and X. I believe that upon taking the placement test @ Trinity, it is assumed the student will be attending. You may be right upon the timing, though. They (the family), may have to meet with the placement counselor before lifting begins.

Rockmom, Diogenes is correct according to X's procedure, they are considered a "student" at St.X after receiving their acceptance letter. Once the student's receive their letters, the incoming student will start receiving the same privileges as the other students, therefore able to begin lifting weights at the school. If that isn't the requirement at T, you might be misinformed or it might be an issue for T. My understanding, if I have been informed correctly, this is the rule. The letters are not sent out until February, and are received by the school in March.

Also, another reason for waiting til acceptance letter, and it was brought up by All Work No Play, is the insurrance issue. The school can't cover anybody who gets injuried using the weightroom who is not a student.

Well, it's been a while since we dealt with that. My son's a senior this year, and frankly....my mind's a little cloudy these days....old age is a horrible thing! ;)

The Fort Thomas 60 minutes is open to 6th and 7th graders also.

Rockcastle County has it for the 8th graders that will be incoming freshmen next year. I think it gets up and running here in a few weeks.

Lawrence Co. Has a program for any one that want's to lift we have several 7th & 8th graders lifting right now they lift with the varsity .The coaches just try to keep the kids in groups according to their Strength. LC has a great wieght room and they started lifting the week after the Bell Co. game it wasn't mandatory they just opened the wieght room up for any one that wonted to lift we have had about 25 to 30 kids lifting mostly under class men . If the seniors to be don't get out and work they might just get passed up like a freight train going by because these young men are working very very hard and they also are doing alot of running and are getting in very good shape . Like I tell my son it's money in the bank just make a deposit now and you will be able to draw it out in the hot July heat. Keep up the good work young Dawgs and you old Dawgs better start getting with it or it might be a long year.

Johnson Central has a weight lifting class open to all students. All athletes are encouraged to take it(if their schedule allows). Also, the weight room is open after school (a coach is always there) for any other students or athletes, including the middle school athletes.

Our players lift continuously year-round. The JC staff has done a wonderful job of creating conditioning programs for our players to stay in shape all year, even through the summer.

As Goliath said, Ashland has an advanced conditioning class for all grades. But during the end of the school year, Ashland sends a bus to Verity Middle School, and it takes 7th and 8th graders to the weight room to get an early start on lifting.
