April 25, 201214 yr I think the fact is...they're still TRYING. I see Sharpton and Jackson as being on par with Westboro Baptist Church members. 2nd biggest reach in BGP history. Neither men practices hate. Never have. Quit making me defend those two. Goodness gracious.
April 25, 201214 yr So you are saying (right or wrong) that someone cant express part of our history as a nation? She did nothing wrong, no where in the constitution does it say that you can not wear/display the confederate flag. She did do something wrong. She was told by her school not to do it and she did it anyways. Constitution or not she has to follow the school rules like everyone else.
April 25, 201214 yr To play Devil's Advocate here - Would this be an issue if she was wearing a Hoodie in support of Travon Martin? Also is the school desicion to not allow this dress denying her any Constitutional Rights? (Freedom of Expression/Speech)?
April 25, 201214 yr I have mixed feelings about telling the girl what she can and can't wear. But at the end of the day if there is a reasonable chance that people would have been offended and she was warned two months ahead of time...then the school probably made a good decision. You could really say she got sent home not because of what she was wearing, but because of her complete disrespect for authority.

They don't allow students to wear clothes with drug references, foul language and etc.
April 25, 201214 yr Bet she made Ma and Pa proud! Hometown Heroes for sure. That was my first thought...where are the parents? I know she's 18 but come on..
April 25, 201214 yr That was my first thought...where are the parents? I know she's 18 but come on.. Who knows...mom might have made the dress for her.

How can the school allow these items with the flag to be wore every day to school, in the window of half the vehicles in the parking lot, but then say, um yeah you cant get in here wearing that.
April 25, 201214 yr Who knows...mom might have made the dress for her. That wouldn't surprise me at all. I don't think I really have a problem with a high school kid wearing a confederate flag dress, though.
April 25, 201214 yr How can the school allow these items with the flag to be wore every day to school, in the window of half the vehicles in the parking lot, but then say, um yeah you cant get in here wearing that. Because the school can regulate what they want to inside the hallways of the school. The second amendment says I have a right to bear arms but my workplace won't allow me to walk around carrying a glock inside at work but I can keep it in my vehicle.

People wear hoodies all of the time when it is chilly outside. Need more info. See post #25 for your constitution concerns.

I think every public school in the United States has dress regulation in one form or another though.
April 25, 201214 yr I understand the Confederacy and its history in America. Contrary to what some believe the Confederacy was built more than on slavery. And let us not pretend the Union was giving equal rights to black people in the mid-1800s. With that said, every time I see the Confederate Flag I literally cringe. Freedom of expression, fine I get it. But for a big chunk of the people that sport it around on their vehicles are doing it as a statement of overt racism. I almost wish the Government could outlaw the thing because of what it has come to represent, which is not the preservation of heritage, but the dislike of minority groups. There was a group riding through town holding two Confederate Flags out their window about a month ago. Ticked me off to no end.
April 25, 201214 yr Seems like an incident happens like this every year. Someone wanting to get their moment in the spotlight. If schools can have dress codes (and they do), they can certainly legislate prom attire.
April 25, 201214 yr The swaistika was a good luck symbol for years, but my guess is that it would be frowned upon as a prom dress theme.
