April 25, 201214 yr Those of you in support of her wearing this racist symbol, I have a scenario for you.QUOTE] Like I said before, it isnt a racist symbol to me, it only shows you are from the south.
April 25, 201214 yr I think the school was in the wrong for kicking her our of the prom. It is her constitutional right to wear that dress and express her "freedom of speech". Unfortunatley, there are ignorant people (like this girl, her parents, and whatever idiot decided to make a dress designed from the confederate flag) who decide that there is some kind of reason to go forth with exercising that right with something like that dress.
April 25, 201214 yr If you have something to say about the issue at hand, say it. If you want to jump to another correlation, start a new thread. Thanks Mod....??? ha ha. So what does FUBU mean? Do certain clothes not have certain inherent meaning? Is wearing your jeans around your ankles a form of expression that you support, or should we arrest these folks of every color for indecent exposure? Or go to any mall and check out the girls in their undergarments showing on top. This is offensive to me as are the piercings and tatoos everybody nowadays sports. I bear it because it is their right to wear it, but I KNOW they look like fools that I would NEVER hire as an employer that does hire people.
April 25, 201214 yr Like I said before, it isn't a racist symbol to me, it only shows you are from the south. What would you say if I said that swastikas aren't anti-Semitic to me, they only show that I'm from Germany? Or perhaps maybe more pertinent to you, what would you say to someone who claimed that they were only celebrating their Islamic heritage by burning an upside down cross and defecating on the Bible?

As a free speech advocate I think she should have the right to wear it. Those students are going to have to learn that there is offensive and idiotic expression outside of the confines of the school and they are going to have to learn to deal with it. But, the Supreme Court has ruled that student speech is limited within school or school-based activities, so the school didn't do anything technically wrong here, especially since she was given prior notice.
April 25, 201214 yr Schools do that all the time though. They don't allow students to wear clothes with drug references, foul language and etc. Agreed, she knew before hand she would get in trouble. I don't really have a problem with the dress but obviously some do.
April 25, 201214 yr Like I said before, it isnt a racist symbol to me, it only shows you are from the south. And people who feel that way do so, because they themselves are racist.
April 25, 201214 yr And people who feel that way do so, because they themselves are racist. WOW, let me let you in on a secret, I am not racist by any means. But I am proud to be from the south. If you want the flag to represent racism to you then fine, it doesnt to me, because I am not racist. It has a different meaning to me, so when you decide what I have to think of feel for something, then please kill me.

If that is how you truely feel then fine, I may think other wise. You are making up examples that are not how you really feel. Yeah the swastika has become to represent hatred as has to the rebel flag to some. But I am not worshipping the rebel flag, or even have one, but to me it only represents the southern heritage and IMO that dont make you a racist. Are we allowed to wear gray shirts since the Rebels wore gray, does that represent racism?

But I am not worshiping the rebel flag, or even have one, but to me it only represents the southern heritage and IMO that don't make you a racist. Are we allowed to wear gray shirts since the Rebels wore gray, does that represent racism? Correct...I am making up examples that are not how I really feel - but only because I don't really feel that there is ever any reason for me to take pride in or go around brandishing symbols that clearly came about with the soul purpose of representing a bigoted, racist, or hateful group of people.
April 25, 201214 yr One of my favorite passages from U.S. Grant's autobiography: "But I would like to see a truthful history written...The justice of the cause which in the end prevailed, will, I doubt not, come to be acknowledged by every citizen of the land, in time. For the present, and so long as there are living witnesses of the great war of sections, there will be people who will not be consoled for the loss of the cause which they believed to be holy. As time passes, people, even of the South, will begin to wonder how it was possible that their ancestors ever fought for or justified institutions which acknowledged the right of property in man." I guess we'll have to wait for a bit more time to pass before we will see that.

Businesses can also refuse to serve people that don't adhere to dress codes if THEY choose, just alike a school that puts on an optional event can have a dress code. Again, attending prom is not a constitutional right. In that matter, I'd be more in line with arguing that she has a right to wear a flag (however disgusted it makes me) as an expression of free speech to school, as she does have the right to a public education. However, the courts have ruled on this and other related issues as it pertains to school dress and conduct codes. Certainly, she does not have a RIGHT to attend prom. Thus, if she chooses to attend, she has to adhere to the rules.
