Ditto...yard work will not be an excuse not to go any longer. More students and alumni will start their Friday evening off with a game at CCH. The Griffin Center should also see more activity.

IMO, attendance will be based soley on who the CCH opponent is. The numbers will be up when playing the Birds for obvious reasons. If CCH does play Moeller, it won't matter to Moeller where the game is played or when it is played. Heck the Birds and Moeller would play CCH on the river bank if it was on the schedule, without any problem at all. If CCH's first game under the lights is against Moeller or anyone else for that matter,I would think the lights may have a negative effect on CCH's football team. First it would seem like an away game for CCH , and second, everyone will want to be the first to beat CCH under their newly installed lights. Also the Bird hunters dressed in their blaze orange (hard core CCH students) might be too excited to get a shot off,( called bird fever) with all the excitement of the newly installed lights at CCH. If CCH has a bad season and loses often and early, the lights aren't going to mean squat, from the attendance stand point.

 

Im looking forward to the rivalry , lights or no lights . Both teams will be ready to "get it on", day or night.

Haha, well I guess you could make that argument, yeah. My understanding was that Coach Ray was more about spending any money they had on other things because he was perfectly happy playing on Saturdays, and he certainly never had any interested in pushing for lights. As head coach of the football team, that kind of put a stop to the lights...but I don't think he ever actively put a stop to a campaign for lights.

Yes, one could spin it that way as well. With that said most opposing coaches either scheduled its bye week before or after the titanic struggles that once existed on Sat afternoons in Park Hills.

Now that was for regular season games but playoff games for teams that may never had played on a Sat every plus the fact teams dont have the luxury of resting before or after is a huge advantage to CovCath. JMO.

And yes if it is the 4th wk of the playoff then you are correct, CovCath is really good and nobody is going to beat them.

You make a good point about opponents typically scheduling a bye week around playing CovCath. I would contend though that has more to do with CovCath than anything with the schedule. If you've got CovCath on your schedule and a bye to play with, they're right at the top of the list of places to put it, ideally before, but maybe after.

I've never heard that the terms of the deal were for "ever". Doesn't mean that they couldn't have been...but I'd honestly be a little surprised if the deal was struck that way. Regardless, I know that since then they've had 100% turnover (a few times over) on city council and the planning committees in Park Hills. I also know that most, if not all of the original neighbors have moved out as well.

 

The administrators at Cov Cath are still playing things pretty close to the chest regarding when the lights will happen, but it has been made clear for 6 or 8 months now that lights are an inevitable goal. There are existing drawings of the campus plan that incorporate the new stadium renovations that include a new grandstand and pressbox, as well as established locations for field lighting. The final locations of the lights will obviously be subject to the requirements of P&Z review.

 

The new grandstand/pressbox will be on the current visitors (west) side of the field, and will face towards Dixie Highway. There are a lot of people who assume that the lights will all end up on the west side of the field and will only face the highway as well, although the current "plans" show that Cov Cath is intent on trying to have them on all four corners of the field. The grandstand will also include at least one locker room for the visiting team. There is currently no visiting locker room, so Cov Cath has to pull out the mats and have them walk (in cleats) on the gym floor instead.

 

Now, they can plan all they want for this stuff...but the fact remains...everything costs money.

 

On the Old State Road side 5 of the 8 neighbors are still there. The original deal was not that CCH could never have lights or change the football facility. It SIMPLY said that if CCH wanted to make any changes or improvements that it needed to be approved by the City. TO MY KNOWLEDGE CCH HAS NEVER ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO INSTALL PERMANENT LIGHTS! While the City/neighbor issue is a hurdle, please stop blaming the neighbors for CCH not having lights.

Now CCH is asking permission and it looks like they are going to get it. That is how it works and i am good with that.

I honestly think a lot of folks are missing the real reason for the lights! Practice time and yes I know about the new fields behind the baseball field that won't be ready for another year but honestly the lights are needed for practice time for the many different teams/sports to extend the time that practice can take place. It has nothing (okay a little bit) to do with having games on Friday night!

 

And that is the biggest concern for neighbors. It is not the couple times a week that people are worried about. It is the 5 to 7 nights a week that the lights could be on. Will there be time that the lights must go off? Will they rent the field out? Will they use the PA system past a certain time? Will they keep the area between the new press box/building maintained and clean. I am skeptical because in the past there has been little to no regard of CCH being a good neighbor.

Please understand that I am all for CCH getting lights and a new press box/ building. Most rational people would have these concerns if they owned property that was in the same situation.

Sorry, I did not intend to say that you are placing "blame" on the neighbors. What I am trying to say is that the general opinion is that the only reason for no lights is because the neighbors object to them. The original plans that were presented to the City of Park Hills did not have lights, bleachers or a concession building on the visitors side of the field. The plans were approved and the neighbors were assured that any changes in the future would have to be approved by the City and Area Planning AND that the neighbors would be consulted.

As I said, I was referencing the neighbors as being "part of the reason". Now I didn't mean it to be taken absolutely 100% literally, but for me to have said "The answers: 1) money, 2) money, 3) neighbors, and 4) money." would at least appear to me to imply that I was saying that the majority of the reason for not having lights (three-quarters, to be exact) was money.

 

And you can believe me, the consideration of the neighbors IS on the mind of the Cov Cath administrators when it comes to the lights. I've heard the conversation take place time and time and time again in the score box when the visiting coaches come in - particularly in the playoffs. "Well, these Saturday games are certainly a change-up for high school football." Then Mike Guidugli says with his Bob Newheart-esque delivery "Wellllllll, we didn't have funding for the lights when we built our stadium, so there's that, and then there's those neighbors with their backyards right up against our field. We've always just had our home games on Saturdays."
