If given the opportunity to select Patrick Towles or Zeke Pike as a recruit at your favorite college program, would there be any BGP'ers who would take Zeke?

 

I wish Zeke the best of luck and hope he becomes an All-American. But, if I had to pick one of the two, I would definitely take Patrick. In my opinion Patrick is a better passer, better runner and better thinker.

 

Following their junior year, no doubt I would have preferred Pike. Following their senior year, no doubt I choose Towles. And that is based 100% on what I saw on the field, not on anything off the field.

Can you really compare the two? Two totally different teams and players. What would Towles have done playing at Dixie? Pike probably would've been very successful with the talent he would have had at Highlands.

 

Now that Pike will have a solid team around him, he may do very well.

I asked who I should trust more when evaluating a high school qb - slaps like me on BGP or someone whose livelihood depends on picking correctly?

Comparing 99% of QBs to PT is unfair to those kids especially when we are using the maturity measure. PT is unusually mature.

He is a talented athlete. You don't get recruited hard w/out having taken a varsity snap w/out that. I think everyone agrees on that. It's his ability to control his emotions and make good decisions throwing the ball that most question.

 

And I agree with you, but some kids are more hard-headed than others. I think the best thing for him was to get in the college football setting early where if he does not get things under control, there are guys there that will persuade him otherwise. If he doesn't "get it", he'll be going JUCO or out of the sport. There's plenty of others waiting to take his place.

I am strictly looking at what I saw out of those two players on the field themselves and not factoring in their teams. IMO Towles improved a lot between his junior and senior years.

I think it is really difficult to make a judgement about on the field decisions made by qbs. We as fans have know idea what the coach is telling them he wants done on a particular play or how the offense is designed as a whole. I also think this applies to all levels of qb play not just high school.

In my trip to Mississippi this weekend, I was stuck in a huge traffic jam for around three hours due to a wreck on north bound I-65 in Alabama. Just so happens the good folks surrounding my car were all local people and huge Auburn fans. I of course had on one my Covington Catholic tee shirt that one of the Auburn fans kept looking at and after looking at my license plate and seeing it said Kentucky asked me if the CovCath was the CovCath that the new Auburn QB had played against.

 

Of course I said yes and told him that IMO Zeke wasn't even the best QB from our area and that the best QB from our area went to Kentucky and his name was Patrick Towles and the other was Blake Bir a senior to be at CovCath. I told him Zeke never beat CovCath or Highlands as a varsity player and never smelled a state title and I honestly was surprised that Aubrun took him.

 

Had a very nice chat with some very nice folks who gave me a couple of soft drinks and chips to eat while we all waited.

They had been at a State Park having a family gathering and had left over drinks and chips. In the three hours of sitting on Interstate 65 waiting for the wreck to clear in 85/90 degrees heat, they were nice enough to share some with us.

 

So yes we talked and BTW not just about Zeke but sports in general and SEC Basketball and Baseball in particular!

 

We all tried to make a bad situation, as pleasant as we all could but I guess you would have just sat in your car and fumed at the wreck ruining your day! I on the other hand had a rather enjoyable conversation with some very nice people from the State of Ala.

 

RE: I know you are a big Pike defender, but read your own words again that I bolded and then recall the end of the Colonels year last year and see if you would change your mind...

 

Colonels had a tough year in 2011. There were lots issues going on both on the field and off. They were also decimated by injuries. No question football is the consummate team sport. Just don't think Z had the support staff down the stretch and attitudes went south.

 

I could be wrong about Zeke, but I do think he can be a very successful SEC QB. Time will tell.
